THE CALL FOR MEN

LARGE REGISTRATIONS

OVER 130 IN TWO DAYS

Thursday and yesterday have been fed-letter days at the Headquarters Offiw of _\o. 5 Group .(Wellington City and Suburbs), us far as registration.of recruits is concerned..-No towel than. 131 men offered tlieir services, and of that number fjfi were declared medically fit. There were 47 men who were deemed to be unfit, while 20 will have to come up for medical examination at a later period, ns they v/ero reported to bo temporarily unfit. The number of the recruits who came forward craving the past two days constituted somewhat of a record in comparison with' the dailv enlist.nients for the past few months. .What the Defenco authorities need now is enough fit men. to register, so that drafts ud to .the 21st and 22nd, -Reinforcement's' Will be full, or over full, on paper. If this could be done the authorities would be saved a considerable amount,of.anxiety concerning men not coming forward to fill the respective drafts. Recruiting -generally throughout New. Zealand during the post week, or so Ji.-is j been very satisfactory, , . but there has I been a very large p'erbuntage qf unfit men' coming forward. This, it is explained, is caused by large numbers, who were i previously examined and found to be. nil- ' fit-registratioiLs again in consequence of .the standard,of having been.lowered in certain directions. ; . City's Big Effort. i

Last month Wellington city and suburbs did particularly well, considering that, up till. a.little time back there was a heavy shortage of recruits. A return .issued front No. s.Group Headquarters ; office shows that during the month 531 : n.c.o.'s and men were sent into cainp from this district. These figures, however, represent two drafts, namely, the lGth ' and 17th Beinforceinents, ■as well as ri.c.o.'c for the 18th and ,19th. Up till yesterday the Wellington City . ;and suburos had sent into camp, a surplus of 18 men over the quota asked for ,lor tho_ 17th Eeinforcements,. viz., 172, and had the whole of the men, who were called up paraded .this week the surplus . would .have ,' been, fifty. it is, men are coming forward every day and asking if they can go into camp at N , once, and' llie answer is always in the affirmative. To date there are 134 names on the books of men who have: signified their' willingness to go into camp with 1 the ' 18th Infantry Eeinforcements, and those figures do not include men who enlisted for that draft .yesterday! juture. reinforcement drafts are also filling rapidly, but tho authorities ; wish it to be clearly' understood that us many men as jxjssible are Wanted- to make up wastages, etc., and if they .'prove fit they will be sent into camp right .away. Men Go Into Camp.
