MAGISTRATE'S COURT

NIGHTAVATCHMAN IN TROUBLE. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, and heard the cases brought by the police. John Edwin Henderson, nightwatchman at tho Defence Base Rewrds Office, had seven charges preferred against him of stealing from tho kits of deceased soldiers. The articles alleged to have been stolen were watches, medals, knives, coins, badges, pipes, etc. On tho application of Inspector Hendrey tho accused was remanded till June 8. OTHER CASES. A soldier named Josoph Sydnoy Green, who returned by the AVillochra, was charged with drunkenness, and -using obscene language. Ho was convicted for drunkenness, but as a conviction on the second chavgo would cause him to lose his pension, the Magistrate dismissed the case. ,

John Buckley, who had already been in custody for seven days on a charge of stealing a. motor-lamp glass and a gaslamp brass fitting, valued at lis. Gd., from some person unknown, was convicted, and sentenced to seven (toys' imprisonment, -which, sentence tho Magistrate observed had already been served. Alfred Hawthorne charged with committing an indecent aot, was convicted, and fined -10s., with tho option of fourteen days' imprisonment. For insobriety, William Gray was fined 10s., in default forty-oight hours' imprisonment. CIVIL ACTIONS. • Before Mr. AV. G. Paul Dietrich sued Mrs. V. S. Harding for £8 18s. Gd., value of goods received. Mr. I'. AV. Jackson, who appeared for the defendant, said the peculiarity, of this case was that plaintiff left the goods on approbation, and then refused.-to take them back, saiying it was a sale. The plaintiff, who was not represented by a' solicitor, denied this, and asked for an adjournment, which was granted on his paying £1 Is. costs. JUDGMENT SUMMONSES. Henry Evans was ordered to pay to D. AViison on a debt of £1 10s, 6d. the sum of 3s. per month in liquidation. E. AV. Biggs was ordered 'to pay to T. S. M'Guire £3 15s. by June 15, default being fixed at forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Charles Daniel Hargreaves was ordered to pay £6 10s. due on a maintenance order by June 15, the alternative being six days in gaol.
