DIPHTHERIC EPIDEMIC
IN HAWKE'S BAY DISTRICT
By Telegraph—(Special Correspondent.) Napier, May 31, • The diphtheria epidemic in Hawke's • Bay is not abating, and threo more eases were to-day reported. It is stated that: about 75 per cent, of the school children at some of the schools are at present suf-' fering from bad throats. Tonsilitis is rifo among the children, and there is, little hope for these children if they contract diphtheria. Yet tho most of them aro having' nothing xlone, and they might bo said to bo specially prepared to becoino victims.
"The Education Department claims to havo inspecting doctors," said an authority on disease to a reporter, "but" if. that ia so they are worse than useless at tho present time. All the children should be examined at least once a week during an epidemic like tho present one. If that were done and the bad throats immediate, ly attended to the epidemic would disr appear."
