EMPIRE DAY CELEBRATIONS
The All-for-Empiro movement is making fory eatisfaclory progress in the city, and tlio cominittoe in charge of the Umpire Day colobrations, on Friday and Saturday next, have practically completed their arrangements and are anticipating very successful times both in the schools and in connection with the demonstrations at the Town Hall on Saturday. Of ten members of Parliament who wore approached in conj unetion with a number ot commercial men, six have already responded and intimated their willingness to address the boys and girls at such schools as may bo allotted to them 011 i'l'iday afternoon, the gentlemen thus infnatnig tlieir acceptance of tho League's wvitntiona being Dr. Newman Messrs. aV t,,-'., T. K. Sidey, T. v A - Wright, and J. A. j-ouiiE, M.P. s, A number of coraraerciol nien have also intimated their "willingneasto take part in tlie school addresses, and the secretary (Mr. A. J. Carlton) hopes to have the list; completed this evening, and to bo ill. a position to notify the headmasters and the cliuirmon of the local Bchool oommittees of the speakers who will visit their respectivo schools. The theme the addresses will of course bo the Empire, with incidental references to tho obit 0 °l ■ 'J 1 - 6 r- i' l iipire League and tne patriotic duty of placing one's conntry and Empiro first in all things. For Saturday 6 meetings Mrs. James Hannah is preparing a Pageant of Empire which will bo likely to prove at onco pleasing i ipPressivo. It will be produced unMer thai, lady's direction at both afternoon and evening gatherings. The afternoon assembly is being given up to the young people, the seating accommodation bonig lArgely reserved for the boys and girls youths and maidens attending the schools and colleges of tho city and suburbs. Tho sneakers at that gathering, o\t>r which the Mayor will preside, will be tho Hon. Dr. M'Nab and the Hon. .T. Ct. W. Aitken. The Mayor will again take the chnir at the citizens' meeting i ntho evening when tho principal speakers will bo the Prime Minister and Sir Joseph Ward. A good imisioal programme is being provided for both gatherings.
