DEFENCE OFFICER IN COURT

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganul, May 3D. As a sequel to the recent death of a .voting woman named Edna Beatrice Hogs in the Wanganui Hospital. Richard Patrick Pollard, n sergeant-major ill the Defence I-'orces in Hawern, was charged in the Magistrate's Court to-day with illegally using an instrument with intent to procure miscarriage. Dr. Earle, honorary surgeon of the Wa.nganui Hospital, said the woman's death wac due to blood poisoning. Tlie principal witness for the police was Frederic Timms. typewriter expert, who stated that a letter purporting to he sent bv the accused to deceased ,was typed on the floral Barlock typewriter, in the Defence Offices at Hawera. He said the ma. cliine had imperfections in certain letters wjich were repeated consistently in tlio correspondence which was typed on the machine. Accural pleaded not guilty and vraa committed for trial.
