17th REINFORCEMENT
READY FOR CAMP YESTERDAY'S PARADE STATE Wellington's quota for the 17th Reinforcements was 172 men of all arni6, but 213 were called up to parade yesterday moi'iung. Of the No. 5 Group Area's total of 172, only 166 men paraded at Buckle Street, thevo being a shortage of six men. Subsequently, however, four men—R. Williams, J. Cannody, G. E. Maiisill, aud F. C. Woods— said they were willing to go into camp with the draft, and their ucrviccs were accepted. _ This made the quota two short of its original complement. Later on in the day another four men, who had not been called up, came forward—H. Chapman, J. H. Markham, H. H. M'Ghie, and J. Smith—and were sent into camp by the 1.20(p.m. train. This made a surplus of two men as far as the No. 5 Group Area was concerned. Before the No. 5 Headquarters Recruiting Office. closcd last evening several other men came forward and said that they were willing, to go into camp with the 17th, and conserfuently tho Defence authorities anticipate that they will secure the whole of the 213 men. within the next few days. WANGANUI'S QUOTA. By. Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, May 30. The local draft for the 17th Reinforcements, which left here yesterday, .had eleven over the quota. RECRUITING BOARD'S FIGURES. POSITIONS OF THE VARIOUS GROUPS. The following statement has been prepared by the Recruiting Board:— "As was anticipated from the previous returns of enlistments, there is no doubt that the 17th Reinforcements will mobilise in cajnp this week well over strength, the official-figures of registrations for the infantry and all other arms of the service being full as at Friday last. Particulars are as under:— "Group I—Auckland1 —Auckland City, surplus 172; Group 2, Paeroa, shortage 15; Group 3, Whangarei, surplus 2; Group 4, Hamilton, shortage 11; total surplus for Auckland Military District, 148. "Group 5, Wellington City, surplus 3; Group' 6, Palmerstou North, surplus 12; Group 7, Napier, shortage 38; Group 7a, Masterton, shortage 2; Group 8, Hawera, surplus lit; total shoi-tage for Wellington Military District, 0.
"Group 9, Christchurcli City, shortage 19; Group 10, Timaru. surplus 38; Group 11, Kaiapoi, surplus 9; Group 11a, Greymouth, shortage 15; Group 12, Nelson, surplus 11; total surplus for Canterbury Military District, Ti, "Group 13, Dunedin City, surplus 9j Group 14, Invercargill. surplus 3; Group 15, Oamaru, shortage 17; Group 16, Milton, surplus 10; total surplus for Otago Military District, 5.
"The total Dominion surplus for the 17th Reinforcements is 164. There was existing ,on Friday last 1 a shortage on previous drafts of 120. and a shortage arising- out of wastage in cain.p of 121, "Or, a total of 241. 'It will, therefore; be seen that the total Dominion shortage under all heads as at Friday last was 77."
