AUSTRIAN CENTRE PUSHED FORWARD
. ITALIAN WINGS HOLDING THE LINE MILITARY SITUATION REVIEWED By Teleeraiih—Prose Association-Copyright fflcc; May 80, 8.50 p.m.) , . Rome, JJa.v 20. Ihe Austrians have scored a substantial succcss on their centre, inasmuch as the Italians have abandoned tlieir main lino from the Arsiero to the Asiago Plateau. The Austrians are nearly at Posina, and are closing in upon Arsiero, where they claim to have captured an armoured work iju tho northern outskirts. Italy's situation on' tho wings, however, is very satisfactory. Tho Austrians suffered terrible losses in • their, attacks 011 the Italian left wing, especially at Zugna Torta and Coni Zugna. The t Austrians are utilising fifteen divisions for their offensive, an a front of fifty miles, between Lake Garda and tho Drenta. The nature of the country does not permit of a continuous line of trenches similar to those at Verdun. The chief handicap to tho Austrians is the "iack of railways and good roads. Arsiero is deserted, but intact. The population in tho Vicenza district is calm and confident. Tho Italian soldiers, aro massing everywhere. • AUSTRIAN SUBMARINE ATTACKS CJIVITA VECCHIA. (Kec. May 29, 8.25 p.m.) London, May 2'.!. Lloyd's report that an Austrian submarine entered the Italian port of Civita, Vecchia and shelled the steel works, doing slight damage, and also shelled and sank a coal steamer, killing a sailor. fThere is an important arsenal at Civita Vecchia.J
