APPEAL BY THE MATOE. Eftferriug to the appeal lie is making for the purpose of erecting an Officers' 01ul> at Trentham, similar to that at Fentherston, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated yesterday that thero lvas a need for a common meeting - ground in the big camp at Trentham, vrhcro officers and men could meet in a place that would be tree of (lie hard and last military regulations essential to discipline. That the Peathersto'u Camp Club was a success was proved by the fact that such general use was being made of it that it iras at present being enlarged. Such clubs were also to bo found in the big camps in Egypt, whore they have beeii much appreciated by officers, non-com-missioned officers and men. It would be, said Mr. Luke, absolutely a citizens' club for tho use of the members of our fine citizen array, and an aid to their social well-being. The matter was mooted at the time of the Ministerial visit to tho Featherston Camp, when the visitors were shown over the club, and were given an insight into Wvli-at such an institution meant for tho men. It was after that that tho Minister of Defence (the Hon. Jas. Allen), in conference with tho Mayor and others, promised ,£ISOO towards the erection of the club, the T.M.C.A. (which is to control the institution) giving .£IOOO, and the citizens of Wellington .HSOO. The Mayor now calls on tho citizens to furnish Him with the XSOO needed to complete tho busiuess. It only requires one hundred men to give a piece or fifty to give .£lO. The list was headed yesterday by the Afayor and Minister of Defence, and' reads:— X s. d. J. P. Luko 5 0 0 Jas. Allen ; ' 10 0 0 ils 0 0 All subscriptions will be acknowledged in The Dominion.
