GRAVES OF THE FALLEN

HOW THEY WILL BE MARKED. The following statement as to the steps being taken to mark the graves of soldiers who have fallen in the war was made by tho Hon. J. Allen in the House yesterday:—, , "Orders havo been placed with one of the largest firms in Egypt for the erection of suitable crosses with brass inscription plates, giving full particulars of rank and name of each deceased soldier whose remains are interred in Egypt and Malta. These crosses will be set in concrete, and will be suitable and durable monuments. The collection of full and precise information for the purpose of identifying the last resting-j)laces of doccased soldiers interred on the Gallipoli Peninsula has engaged the attontion of the Department for some time past. Where the ; remains are interred in single graves similar monuments and inscriptions will be provided as for those buried in Egypt and Malta. Where a large number are interred in a common grave a suitable and imposing monument will be erected, giving the necessary particulars on ono large slab, or, if necessary, on more than one slab. A system has been instituted and is now in operation in tho Base Records Office which will enable inquirers to be furnished with all particulars it has been possible to collect as regards date and placo of death, cause of death, unit to which he belonged, rank and name, and exact position of grave of each deceased member of tho Now Zealanl Expeditionary Force who is buried outside of New Zealand. The Department is now taking steps to furnish next-of-kin with a copy of a, photograph of the gravo where each soldier lies buried and of the monument erected over his remains."
