CHARMING WATER-COLOURS.
AT M'GREGOR WRIGHT'S STUDIO. It will pay picture-lovers to drop into M'Gregor Wright's studio, on Lambton Quay to inspect a collection of watercolours by Alfred Sinclair, R.B.C. That Mr. Sinclair has true artistic perception is at once evident both in his choice of subjects and the skill to conTey them alive on to the canvas. He is no faddist in colour, and there is always a freshness and delicacy in liis general scheme. At times one perceives "a smoothness an delimination of detail that way strike the connoisseur as moro or less of a compromise, but that feature is usually relative to the subject, and is not indicative of the character of the work generally. The pictures are landscapes—Australian, New Zealand, English, and Welsh; Some of the glimpses of Wales he gives are particularly attractive, as, for example, a quiet, stretch of the River' Dee at Llangollen, "Wet Weather, Arthog Lake," in which the dark-blue tones of, the. water figure attractively under the shadows of the mistswathed motfhtains. "Wet Weather on the'.Arthog Moors" again finds the artist stiwigly effective' in the use of a wide range of blues. In' bright relief to the rain-beaten Welsh scenes is "Sunset, Near Harlech," where between two lines of trees is depicted a glowing sunset sky, radiaiitly painted in deep.orango and dull red tones. This is brilliant colouring, boldly conceived, that must command attention. "An Old Cheshire Cottage" is a glimpse of rural England, and the mill scenes at' Dogelly are also peacefully reminiscent of out-of-the-way Wales. "Evening on a River Murray Backwater" is a Mittle gem that many will desire. In its limpid, golden water, and tho faint silhouette of trees in the background, the hazy atmosphere of tho Australian summer is conveyed witli "rare fidelity.'
