NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glencoe.]
. Entries for the Gisborue Meeting close on i'ridajv , The North titago Jockey Club's Winter Meeting will 'commence to-ilay. It looks as it Emperador and Greenstreet aro to go into winter quarters at the conclusion of the Taring at ffaugauui, as they have been allowed to drop out of their Otaki engagements. The, Riccarton-trained Tannhauser'.viH be Bent north.for tlie Otaki Meeting after racing in the Oamaru Cup to-day. A. Reed has been, engaged to ride-tho aged Martian gelding;.. Captain -Dick, who is engaged in the Hack bteeples at AVnnganui to-morrow, is n really good jumper, and as he has had tome racing this heasun he will be meeting the others at an advantage. He carries the same colours as Berco.la, Splendid acceptances have been received for the Ota.ki Meeting, which' opens on June 3. As in the past, the Railway Department is putting on three special trains to convey 'Wellington patrons to tho coursi*. Crown.'Pearl, who showed up we'J in liis only, start .-it the. Egmont Meeting, is likely to be well fancied for tho Hack Hurdles at Wanganui. The Coronet gelding is' not up against a good lot. The best of them is probably Austin, and ho is only a little fellow to handle lOst. 13lb. Rejwrts from Awapuni State that Sir Donald is very b-ickward, and is hardly likely, to .bo .seen in a favourable light ill the Century Hurdles. The favourite may. be the >Auckland-owned Tararu Jack, ivho: bolted away from the field in the big hurdles at FeUding on Pastor Monday. The, race was supposed to.,be run over a two miles course, but', in reality the distance was nearly two miles and a quarter, the same as the Century Hurdles. At Otaki in the spring Master Strowan accounted'for Naupata in the First Hack steeplechase, and the Porinia horse may tind it very hard to give 12lb. to the i'oxton' representative in tho Wanganui Steeplechase, to-morrovr. ' . Ringforth is reported to be hitting out in much better s!:yle now that the tracks ore becoming softer, and he is sure to go out with plenty of admirers in whatever his owner starts hiui in to-day. If he ta\es on the Welter Handicap, lie will meet strong opposition from Seamaid, who had Silent way doing his best to beat her in the Gore Cup. Of the twelve acceptors in tho Oamaru Cup, three of them, in Martius, Magdala, and Rorke'a Drift, are assessed as equal over a mile. Of tho light-weights Re-corder-runner-up -to Martins in tho Final Handicap at Riccarton—may bu the best. Commotion, who has been off tho sceno for some months, will make his reap-.' pearance in tho Empire Hurdles at Oamaru to-day. He may bo seen in a more favourable light ,at Wingatui next week, as tho racing at Oamaru can bo depended upon ! to do liim good. Finboy, who is engaged in tho Railway Handicap, five furlongs, at Oamaru today, is stated to be the equal of Peronilla over a short course. Jf the Achilles mare was in a hack' race with Bst. she would probably be a red hot order. Tho two leading horsemen, J. o'Shea and C. Emerson, aro both engaged at Oamaru to-day. The former \v ; ll be on Up Jenkins, Daytime, Ardmore, Bellshire, and Oxenhope, while Emerson will steer Partisan, Bandy, Seamaid, Finboy, Peronilla, and Speedometer. The withdrawal of Master Lupin from 'his Connolly Handicap engagement did not come as a surprise, as twice recently tho brown gelding has bolted a couple of circuits when exercising on the tracks. F. Tulchcit took Coleraine and Taihapo to the AVangauui Meeting, and will rido the latter, but so far no horseman lias been secured for Coloraino in the Borough Handicap. . For the Wairarapa Trotting Club's meeting on Juno 3 Harold D. is rehandicapped as follows:—Greytown Trot Cup Handicap, Gsec. start; Kempton Park Trot, Iscc. start.
