KARORI AFFAIRS
- MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Karon' Borough Council mot last evening. The Mayor (Mr. B. G. H. Burn) presided, and there were present, also, "i Councillors T. Pell, W. Cooper, J. G. Raino, R. Fairej L. P. Davis, and A. Hamilton.
The Mayor, reported that he had attended a local bodies' conference on the subject of tho Public Hospital levy. He remarked. that he disagreed with the return, which showed, that ICarori had sent 150 patients, to the Hospital in the last, throe years. He travelled about Karori a good deal, .and was sure the return was erroneous.
A councillor: Yes; I would like to seo the 150 nanies.'
Mr. Burn said also that one of the chief difficulties was that of getting patients-to pay. Councillor Hamilton expressed the opinion that admission should be by application to tho Town Clerk. -
The Mayor replied that, to some extent at least, that was done at Petone, an'l in some measure in Wellington. The Mayor of Petone, in dealing with hospital cases, also found out if the patient was able to pay.
The council was notified that 'Mr. D. Robertson is resigning from the -Hospital Board, and it decided that Councillor Hamilton should attend a meeting of Wellington, Miramar, and Karori delegates respecting the appointment of a representative' to fill the vacancy. Tho hope was expressed that Karori would be given representation on the Board, and comment was made on the fact that the smaller bodies have little representation
Arising out of a movo made by tho Northland Auxiliary Fire Brigade, a re« quest was inado to the council to allow firemen to travel freo over the borough lines. . Correspondence from the City Tramway officials showed that firemen in uniform travelled free on the City lines, but on tho Karori lines bad to nay fares.' Another - letter stated that a fireman frorii Northland had refused to pay a fare.
Councillor Faire moved that the request for free travelling for the firemen should be granted. He said that tho Northland firemen's pay was -27 '10s. per year, and certain rates per hour—3s, for the first hour, and so on. Tho Mayor, seconded tho motion, pro forma. - Councillor Pell said that if firemen got the concession asked for, soldiers, also, should get it. Tlio motion was heavily defeated.
