ROBBERY WITH VIOLENCE
A JUDGE'S COMMENT. By Telegraph'-Press Association. Wanganui, May 23. At the Supimit) Court to-day Cornelius Trainer and William Murray were sentenced to 18 months' hard labour, to be followed' by detention not exceeding two years for reformative treatment, for robbery, accompanied by violence, from n man under the influence of drink. The jury expressed appreciation of tho action of Constable Johnston, who, single, handed, arrested the two prisoners shortly after, the crime. The jury also commented on the fact that the prisoners were not defended by counsel, Mr. Justice Edwards said that a Judge would always assign counsel where tlicro wax a possibility of a ju«t verdict of not guilty not being returned. Both prisonors had bad records, and in those circumstances he did not feel justified in spending public funds on their defence. They were a pest to society.
