CITY'S POSITION MUCH IMPROVED DOMINION POSITION The City quota of the 17th Reinforcements is to to mobilised on Monday next. IV this draft the City Deeds 172 infantry, and these have been enrolled and called up. • For the next draft 70 of tho necessary 172 infantry are already on tho books; 38 infantry liave enlisted for the 19th draft; and 49 have enlisted for the 20th Reinforcements. The following men were sent to Trentham Camp yesterdayJ. R. Baker, D. Gear, J. S. Scambury (infantry), and James Gordon (home service). A Duncdiu correspondent reports that recruiting continues very good throughout Otago district. The latest progress reports indicate that there will certainly be full quotas in all four groups for tho Seventeenth Reinforcements, which leave on June 1. Succeeding drafts aro also filling up steadily. .RECRUITING BOARD'S STATEMENT. Last evening the following statement was received from the chairman, of the Recruiting Board (Right Hon. W. F. Massey}:— Recruiting for the Seventeenth Reinforcements for'the week ending May 19 was quite satisfactory, and it is evident that this draft will go into camp next week at.full strength. Christchuroh City, short 54; Timaru, plus 20: Kaiapoi, short 10; Greymouth, short 2l!; Nelson, plus 1; total shortage for Canterbury Military District, 69. Dunedin City, plus 6; Invercargill, short 11; Oamaru, short 29; Milton, plus 7; total shortago for Otago Military District, 27. .
Total Dominion shortage for Seventeenth Reinforcements, 109, ns compared with a shortage of 402 on the corresponding day last week.
In addition to the 353 men who \.v,ere registered for the Seventeenth Reinforcements in the week, 35 men were scut into camp to make good the shortage on previous drafts, and 79 went to Trentham to mako good shortages arising from wastugo in camp. Tho total shortage ar. date of Friday, May 19, for Seventeenth and previous Reinforcements, was 1230, or less than half the number of men who were recruited in tho preceding seven day*.
