CARNAGE AT MORT HOMMES

'GRAPHIC ACCOUNTS OF GREAT BATTLE ATTACK ON BRITISH LINE , WlSfffi TAKEN ON VIMY ' ■ _ HEIGHTS THE AUSTRIAN BLOW . ITALIANS ON TEE DEFENSIVE - ' REVELATIONS AT SINN FEIN COMMISSION There\is yet no apparent relaxing of the desperato struggle on the Vorclun front. The carnage at Mort Hommo has been frightful. Today's messages include graphic accounts of the furious assaults which were de- ' livered by the massed German infantry during the week-end. The com- • municiucs from both sides show that on each, the tide of battle has ebbed' and flowed,'but the French attacks have been comparatively more profit- ' able in results than the German, taking tho losses into account. On the British line the Germans hare scored a point by penetrating a length of front trenches on the Vimy Heights while, per contra, the British hare scored in various mine surprises. A feature of the Western waxfare is the 'development of the aerial battlo from isolated duels to formal engagements by> composite squadrons, which manoeuvre for the advantage of position in cloudland, as do tho figh ting fleets on the sea. On the Italian front the Austrian offensive has been' held, the defending wings stand fast, and the highest confidence pervades tho situation on the Italian side. Tho Germans on the Russian European front have again attempted to. initiate an offensive in - the Narotch region, and have again been foiled. In Mesopotamia the British' are Stead'ly .working along the Tigris, clearing up the enemy by degrees. Artillery fighting is reported from' the Salonika front. The Eoyal Commission, on the Sinn Fein revolt has taken the evidence of Viscount Midleton, who places on. record various-unheeded warnings, and also of Viscount Wim borne, ex-Viceroy of Ireland, whose evidence discloses a remarkable state of affairs.
