Some 'anxiety lias been expressed in Auckland regarding the Union Company's steamer Flora, which was reported as having broken down on the voyage from Auckland to Tahiti. News received here is to the offect: that it was the crankshaft of the steamer which gave outno t the main shaft, as previously stated. The Flora was picked up by a French steamer, and .towed to Papeete, The crank-shaft was taken on shore and fixed up temporarily by drilling and putting up what is termed a "button," to give it strength. Tlio Mapourika,' which, left Wellington about 14 days ago, -would accompany the. Flora, the latter coming along under easy steam. In case of fine weather the Flora would be under control, but if bad weather cam© on the Mapourika would take her in tow. The two steamers may bo expeoted to reach. Auckland about Saturday next. RIVERJNA FROM SYDNEY. Another fart trip, was recorded by the Riverina, which arrived from Sydney about 8 o'clock yesterday morning. The vessel left tho New South Wales port at 4 p.m. on Thursday last. The epeed averaged worked out at 14.25 knots per hour. The trip was- made in 'fine weather, and was without incident. It has not yet been satisfactorily cleared up how or what the Opouri recently struck off Waipapa Point, which caused considerable damage to' her plates, and necessitated her, bp.ing docked-at Lyttelton for some time. 'The evidence at the usual inquiry held indicated, that the vessel was within a short distance from the shore at the time ofHhc* mishap. In view of the somewhat exceptional circumstances, • the Superintendent of Marine at Lyttelton has been instructed to arrange - for a Magisterial Inquiry into tho accidcnt.
