EASTBOURNE FERRY SERVICE.

Sir, —The ferry service at Eastbourne loaves much to he desired. The present arrangements are absolutely the limit, Why .are not return and single tickets issued on board instead of the present method of getting another ticket to go back by. It is all right for men who as a rule have only a brief bag and a pipe, but what about the women who are laden with parcels, and a baby in their arms— in nine cases out of. ten having to stand out on the wharf without shelter of any sort? If it is blowing and raining (and it can do both in Wellington) that ticfoft mufet 1)0 bought and then held till you find yourself, at the gangway, where it is clipped, and after that performance you limst still hang on to it, in case an inspector comes along to see if you have that little bit of papor, for thafs all it is. Why are not turnstiles used, and everybody pay his 6d. as ho goes through, and hnvo done with the tickets altogether? It would save no end of bother. Then, again, on Saturdays and Sundays ■ gates are closed, eo that no matter what tho weather is, atid w'lio is ill, under no consideration can that gate be opened. So out you have to stand with parcels, or luggage, Irowever cold and miserable the weather way be, for it '■'■list bo remembered that tho waiting-room owned by the Harbour Board is shut on Saturday evening and all day on Sunday. I don't know why, except that more people are inconvenienced on that day than any other, and Wellington never catere for the comfort of the travelling public unless is to go ahead it must have a decent ferry service, and clean, comfortable boats for passengers only. X do not believe that you would find the above conditions existing in x-ny port in New Zealand. It certainly is a disgrace t<> the Empire City!—l am. etc., • PRO BONO PUBLICO.
