VICE-REGAL. His Excellency the Governor and the Countess, of Liverpool, accompanied by Sir. Gavin Hamilton, private secretary, and Mr. H. Helmore, A.D.C., left Rotorua for Te Wairoa on Friday morning for further operations among the trout of Lake Tarawera. The Hon. Sir Willinm Hall-Jones was a passenger for the south by the Maori last night. I Mr. W. G. Jamieson, of Chiristcliurch, chairman of the National Council of the Y.M.C.A., find Mr. W. H. George, of Wellington, a member of the executive, irho wont, to Egypt six months ago "to inquire'into the conduct of X.M.C.A. wort there, returned to Wellington yesterday by the Riverina. Mr. Jamieson went south last evening. • The Hon. George Fowlcls has accepted a seat on the Board of Trustees of the Institute for the Blind in succession to Mr. Basil Hewett, resigned. Mr. H. G. Ralfe who has just returned from llarotonga, where he has'filled the pest of Deputy-Commissioner for the last three years, has been : appointed to his old office of clerk of the Auckland Magistrate's Court, the position having been vacant since the retirement of Mr. Barton, some three month.? ago. Mr. Ralfe was clerk of tho court in. Auckland for about IS years prior to his appointment to the llarotoiiga position. Probably ho will take'up his" new duties at the beginning of June. A well-known resident of Napier, Mr. Frank Tuke, died at the Napier Hospital as the result of' an accident. About 5 p.m. on Thursday he tripped and fell down a stairway, fracturing has skull. ■ He was removed to the hospital, but never recovered consciousness. Deceased, who was 60, years of age, was the only eon of the late Captain Tuke. He waj unmarried.
Mr.. Geo. Palmer, an old resident of the Manawatu district, died at Bunnythorpo on Saturday, in his 81st year. Mr. Pal-' iner served in Her Majesty's lioyal Lancers in the Criinojn War and the Indian Mutiny. He was a prominent member of the Veterans' Association.
Ont of forty-seven applicants for the position of secretary to the Greymouth Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, Mr. G. T. Grace was selected. Captain Harvey Bell, of Wanganui, who went to the front with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade,. has been promoted to the rank of major.
■ The death has occurred at Thames of Mr. Richard Herivel, at the age of 51. Deceased had been engaged in mining for many years,, and was a. victim to miners' phthisis.
Dr. Paxton, of Motucka, who is seriously indisposed, is reported to have taken a slight turn for the better.
During the absence 'of Mr. C. F. A. Broad, Mr. I\ S. Seamon, one of the Inspectors of the National Bank, will act as manager, of tho Timaru branch of the bank.
The Camp Commandant at Featherston regrets to announce the death of Gunner Wilkinson, lath N.Z.F.A., who died at Eeatherston Military Hospital at 9.45 p.m. cn Wednesday, May 17.
Mr. Russell, from Wellington, will fill the vacancy in the Westport Post and Telegraph Department, created by the transfer to "Wellington of Mr. A. Currie.
Mr, Maunder, electrician for the Stockton Company, has received an appointmenfc ou' tho Lalcc Coleridge Electrical Supply Works. Advice has been received that Lieut. G. 11. Gray, of Blenheim, who left .with the Seventh Reinforcements, has been promoted to the. rank of captain.
Lieut.-Colonel Hislop left Napier on Saturday for Featherston, wliere he will remain in camp.
Captain Eric H. Orr, of Ashburton, who left with the Seventh Reinforcements, has been promoted to the rank of major. Dr. Th«imer, who has been acting as locum tenens for Dr. Gow at Denniston, West Coast, has been appointed medical officer at Stockton.
Mr Percy Bastings, of Invercargill, a returned trooper, has been appointed dispenser and house steward at the Now Plymouth Hospital, out of eight applicants.
Mr. K. N. 11. Browne, formerly of Napier, succeeds Mr. C. Zaclmriah as manager of the Dunedin branch of the Public Trust Office.
Constable Ferguson, of Masterton, lias been advised of tho death of his father, v,-ho was an old resident of the Otngo province.
At the opening korcro of the Masterton Savage Club ou Saturday, Privato i!. G. Brown, of the Fourteenth Reinforcements, a former secretary of the club, was presented with a handsome wristlet watch.
Father Emmanuel Rougier, millionaire priest, of the South Seas, with his n.Vcc and her companion, journeyed from San Francisco lo Papeete by the mail liner Maitai this trip. Father Rougier, prior to his departure for Tahiti, purchased a fine auxiliary schooner, the Ysabel Hay, which he sent on ahead, and which he will uso for his missionary work.
