METHODIST PATRIOTIC SERVICE

ROLL OF , HOXOUIi UNVEILED. The patriotic service at tho Pahiatua Methodist Church attracted a large congregation, tho building being tilled. Ike line moonlight night enabled many country residents to attend, and the service was of an impressive character and; one of the most successful ever held in tho district. Among those present in uniform \yere: Captain Ju. T. Herbert, Lieutenant J. Trevor Thomas, Sergeant-Major J. H. P. Allen, and Surgeon-Captain H. Paterson, The Mayor (Mr. J. D. C. Crewe) and members of the Borough Council also attended. Tho National Anthem was sung during tho service, and Kipling's Eeces-' sionul and other appropriate and wellknown hymns were rendered, also an anthem by tho choir, under tho conductorship of Mr. J. J. Boagey, tho organist being Mr. AY. A. Boagey. The unveiling of a handsome Roll of Honour, fram. cd in oak, and draped with the Union Jack and New Zealand Ensign, took place. At the request .'of the minister, Mr. 0. Johnson, Circuit Steward, performed the actual unveiling, prefacing tho ceremony with a few. remarks concerning tlie men whose names were inscribed on the Roll of Honour, mentioning that a number lmd either been killed in action or wounded.. Many branches of the servico were represented. Several \ had earned promotion, tho most recent being that of Major Clifton. The Rev. I[. Cottom delivered an.instructive and forceful sermon. >-In the courso of his discourse lie referred to the righteousness of tho ca'use England and her Allies were now fighting, and in passing.incidentally, mentioned tho large number of Methodists belonging to tho. Dominion who w-ere on activo service. He also made very sympathetic' referMicc to those who had lost relatives in the war.
