POLICE AND, THE WAR
■THE EMBARGO ON ENLISTMENT; \IA statement on' of whether taembers of the Police Force-ought to be iallowed to -enlist; was: made yesterday by the HdnV:''Af L'."'Herdmini : 'ii 'rijjly '"fej a .Question. .
Mr. Herdman replied: After carefully "considering. the, .matter the. Government' jlegrets that leave to join tho Expedi.Hionary Force'cannot at present be grantled to members of the Fblico Force. It lis known that many of the younger of the Force are anxious to enlist, blit they cannot be spared- without ■ seriously weakening tho ■ Force. \ They :cbuld, not be replacedby older men who are less physically fit, as the latter ■ would not be able to stand the strain of regular day and night beat duty in. the cities, which must bo kept properly policed. Difficulty is also being experi-. cnced in obtaining suitable men for enrolment in the.:Force to make up tho shortage due to retirements, <stc„ and unless tho strength' of the Force is maintained the many additional duties which have been cast upon the police since tho outbreak of war cannot be efficiently carried out. These additional duties consist of the registration and supervision of . alien enemy subjects,-repo'rtimr' upon applicants for passports and normits to leave New Zealand, various important inquiries on behalf of the military authorities, and many other duties incidental to Conditions arising out of the'war.
