OHAKUNE EXPLOSION
INQUEST OPENED/ By Telegraph.—PreEß Association. Taihape, May 18. The inquest on the men killed in the Ohakune explosion was opened, yesterday. ■ _ ... James Egertoii (shift boss) said he could form no opinion of the cause of the explosion. The stacking of .explosives was completed before the concret-ing-up work was commenced. The explosives used were cainbrites, gelignite,' and dynamite. The two latter had to be warmed before the charge was put in. The man Torrens had not been found, despite a continuous search. William Henderson said he was working in tho quarry when he heard the explosion. He ran away, and the body of Davis landed beside, him. There was no trace of Torrens found. Elias. Partridge,. carpenter, gave evidence that he was erecting casing to receive tho earth and concrete to enclose the charge. < When he left, at 5.5 p.m., the only man in' the tunnel. was_ Torrens, who was packing the concrete ill. Dr. Feltham. stated' that' the bodies of Mellsop, Davis, and It'Garry wore mutilated after death, as death must have been instantaneous from concussion. The inquest was then adjourned for a fortnight. .
