The' Hon. iJ. Barr went south by the Mararoa last evening. i The death occurred at-ChrLstchurch on ' Wednesday of Mr. C. K. MereditVKaye, a well-known Canterbury settler, and son of the late Mr. Edwin Meredith, of Masterton. The.deceased, was fifty-seven years of age. Lieutenant-Commander G. W. S. Seton, of the Australian Royal Naval College, Jervis Bay, is on a visit to . Auckland; Mr. Wm. Perry, a member of the Man* agement Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, lias enlisted, and is now in camp as a non-commissioned offioer. Mr. Perry has been an exceedingly valuable member of t the committee, and whilst regretting the loss of hie services the committee ,oi the union desires ; (says the au* nual report) to oongratulate him on the step ho; has taken. In the annual Teport of the New Zealand Rugby Union the committee ex-* presses thanks to Mr. C. Wray Palliser for his long service as the union s representative in England. The committee regrets to have to record that a breakdown in health has necessitated, his retirement into private life, and trusts that a wellearned retirement will result in a speedy restoration to health, and that Mr. Pal" liser will bo able to continue to cany on the good service which he has in the past rendered to the union.. ; ; Mr. Chas. Zachariah, who has been appointed manager of the Public Trust Offioe nt Wellington, was presented with a 1«k ther travelling bag by. the .Dunedin staff of the Public Trust Office prior to leaving for Wellington by the WestTalia. Mr. K. n N. H. Browne succeeds Mr. Zachariah at Dunedin. Lieut. Eric Reeves, of. the New Z land Rifle Battalion, has cabled to parents in Wellington from Ixmdon t he is "well." Lieut. Reeves was form*; on the staff of the Public Tritft'Ofik ,and left with the 9th Reinforcements^ Commissioner Hodder, of the Salvation ! Army, has returned to town from a tou* in the south of the South Island. A new Girls'- Industrial Home was opened by. the Commissioner at Invercargill. Dunedin, Riverton, Winton, yndham were also among the places visited.
Mr. J. H. Paterson, lecturer in accountancy law, and assistant to Dr. Gilray, tins asked the Dunedin University Council to Rive him leave of absence in order to enlist. He asked 'that Mr. J. Lang be appointed as locum toners in accountancy law, and Mr. A. Watt in ths same capacity in English. This was agreed to. Mr. A.'C. Stephens, lecturer on contracts, applied for and,received leave with a similar object, and the council congratulated both gentlemen upon their attitude, expressing the hope that they would safely return. In a letter to the Dunedin University Council, Lieutenant-Colonel L. E. Barnett stated that ho anticipated -being back in ihinedin before March.
Mr. \y: Suricige was appointed collector , of patients' dues by the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Ai(V Board yesterday. There were 103 applications for the position. At the meeting of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board held yesterday, Miss A. J. Gregory was appointed dispenser to the Hospital, rice Mr. J.. E Watson, who has resigned for health * reasons after seven years'- service. Miss, Grcory has been dispenser at the Christclnircb Hospital for tho past four years. There were fourteen applications for the position.
