THE CALL FOR MEN

LARGE'NUMBERS RESPOND RECRUITING VERY BRISK There has been a welcome briskness about recruiting throughout the whole of New Zealand during the past few day 6, and especially is this noticeable in Wellington City and suburbs. .The cause is attributed to many men trying to register before compulsion is introduced by : Act of Parliament. . llany would-bo soldiers, who have been previously rejected as being medically unfit, evidently. desire to obtain the khaki armlet, and this is said to bo tho principal causa for the rush of recruits.

During the week ended on Tuesday, out of 173 men registered in Wellington for the infantry, 111 were pronounced unfit, leaving only 59 fit. The majority of these 114 had been previously rejected, and not desiring to wear the unfit badge (grey) did not make application, which in many cases involved fresh medical examination, owing to tlio alteration in the standard of recruits. There is, however, a distinct increase 'in AVellington's response, and the Defence authorities are confident that a full draft will be sent into camp for the Seventeenth Reinforcements ill a fortnight's time.
