An idea of the ■ size of the eea running at the tiruo .can be formed by the fact that the Jib of a crano that Is used for landing stores at Capo Bret was badly damaged by the sea—tho iib meantioned being 30 feet above.'the level of tho sea. WHITE STAR LINER AT XUOKLAKD. The White Star liner Afric (11,999 tons), arrived-at Aucklandon Monday from Australia. She' left Sydney'on May 10, and made the trip to tho northern port with head winds and sea. , Captain Hickson is in charge, and has with him:-Chiof officer, Mr. Stubbe; first, Mr. Alcock; second. Mr. Cairns- third? Mi'. Thompson; fourth, Mr, Hamilton,; chief engineer, Mr. Adamson; second.-Mr. Morgan ;■ third, Mr.- Thorpe; fourth, Mr. Cuttle; fifth, Mr. Poetics; sixth, Mr. Cain; chief refrigerating engineer, Mr. Marsliall; wireless operators, Messrs. Rushworth and: Bcattie. The Afric has for some time been engaged as a troopship from Australian ports. She is to load at New Zealand ports for Homo. Tho Afrio has not previously visited New.Zealand, but is well known at Sydney and other Australian ports as a passenger and cargo steamer. She returned recently from Italy to Sydney, after having carried a cargo'of wheat to Genoa and Naples. ■

Rough weather in the north is held re--sponsible for tho grounding of two scows, Monday's Auckland "Staf" reports:—"Tho scow Walkonini is ashore at tho Portland cement works at Whangarci. She was very light, having practically, discharged her Auckland cargo. There 'has . been littlo damage done, the placo where 6ho went ashore being sandy. Sho will ho refloated without difficulty. Sho' ie 23 tons register, and.is.owned by Messrs..Wiustone, Ltd. Tho Bee, owned, by Messrs.-Emirali and Ford, is ashore at Puhoi Creek, whero she' beached on Friday last. Sho haa lost her cargo of coal, thoucrh it is thought that, she will bo refloated without.difficulty. Captain E. Strom is in cftargo of the Bee."

A cablo message received yesterday reports the arrival at Pugct' Sound of'the American schooner Defiance, which cleared from Lyttelton on February 28.
The auxiliary schooner Echo, for some time lying idle in tho "harbour, has been sold by Dalgety and Company to Richard son. and Company, and will:be taken in tow by, tho Hippie to-day to proceed to Napier, whero more. powerful engines will bo fitted.
