Harwood. NOT THERE! POSTAL CANVASS AND "DEAD LETTERS." On Tnursday last the local Recruiting Committee and helpers posted the last of 13,000 recruiting cards to people whoso names appeared on the. National Register, and of' whose attitude towards military service they desired to ascertain frankly tor recruiting purposes. In yesterday's Dominion it was correctly stated that tho replies received were comparatively few In number, and, were dwindling down to three or four per post. It appears, however, that tho Postal authorities wera holding u large number of cards, something between 1500 and 2000, and these, together' with the product of the Dead Letter Office, came to hand yesterday. It surprised the secretary (Mr. R. R. Martin), the writer, and will surprise the public to ' learn that between 1500 and 1600 addressed envelopes, containing cards have been returned to tho committee, within the space of a day or so, as not traceable. One could, imagine that a certain percentage of tho men to whom cards had been sent might havo removed or enlisted, but not 1500 of them. The conclusion come to by those who saw the bundles of "returned empties" at the Town Hall yesterday was that the men, or nt least a great many of them, must have given incorrect addresses when filling in their cards for the National Register. Otherwise it is difficult to account for' such a large return from the' Dead Letter Office. "If that ia the oaso," remarked one of the recruiting' officers, "then the sooner We havo conscription the better!"
