A little concern was felt among shipping .people, for the safety of tho Blackballl/Oiupaiiy's steamer Ngatoro, which left Limestone Island on Tuesday last at midnight,, laden with cement and general' cargo, for Gisborne, Wellington, and the' Br.uT.n. The vessel was due at Gisborne on Ihursday morning, and was expected to no m Wellington on Friday or- Satiir. day TJp till yesterday thero was no ap.poaranco of tho vessel, and it was thought perhaps she had been sheltering on tho coast from the recent "blo-w." Advice, however, was received by the Wellington .office of tho company last night that the Ngatoro, after being six days out, arrived at Gisborne yesterday afternoon, and reported "AH well." ESSES AT HOME. Advice has been received'by tho local agents for tho F. and S. Lino that the liner Es;ex arrived at Liverpool from .Wellington on Thursday Inst. The vessel left* Wellington on March 12. TIIE WHANGAPE FROM VANCOUVER It was expected that the Whangapc, from Vancouver and Suva, would have arrived ) n „ Bor ' yesterday There was no appearance of the vessel up till a late hour'last nigiit however, which, in view of the recent heavy weather, is not surprising. The VDangapo will, on discharge of her cargo here, depart for Westport and Auckland, and from thence to Fiji.
HOW THE MATATTJA WENT DOWIf. Messrs. 0. H. Slode and Co., Sydney, have received from Montreal ,thc following partieulars regarding the explosion which took ?,!? CO . °Ti oai ' d tho steamer Matotua on i-mftt S ~ v^}e U i e vessel WM load " Rsi , ' John s (New Brunswick) for New Zealand ports :-"According to investigations there were a large number of motoroars on the boat, some of which are supposed to-have had gasolino stored wi4 ;' iu I i le the V 6Ssel ,vas at th s wharr a Me broke out in one of these holds, causing an explosion of the gasoline. fW w, e «\,ri'° ca i U Sf °« ut " considerable water was used, and the firo was apparently extinguished. Tho firemen left the boat, una the captain went to bed.'lt was about 45 hours after the lire occurred 'that a second explosion took place, which damaged the boat slightly and killed the captain. Ihe assumption is that during the flro vrtwor used by the firemen had come into coutact with carbide out of some of the packages which may have bceu broken by ttie- first explosion. The gas thus created became ignited, causing a second explosion, the officers m charge of the boat, doing what they thought best in the interests of all concerned, opened the flood gates and allowed the boat to sink, so that at high tide the boat was completely covered and the carbido submerged. The Quantity aboard was 250 tons.'"
