THE CALL FOR MEN

CITY'S POSITION

IMPROVEMENT CONTINUES

Tho improvement in eity recruiting (re. eently mentioned) is reported to lie continuing. Over 150 of the 172 infantry group needed by the end of the month, lor the next draft, have been secured. The following men have been enrolled at Buckle Street as fit for active service:—

Hill, toman, City (Infantry). A. 3. Nichol, clerk, City (Infantry). Tho city group has sent 'the following men to camp, mostly as additional infantry for the 16th Reinforcements :— G. W. Reeves, Robert Grav, Edward Williams, W. G. Bass, T. S. Bowden. R. D. Young, J. L. Shackelton. THE POSTAL APPEAL A POOR RESPONSE. Recruiting continues to go briskly at the Town Hall. Whether it is the etfect of £he postal canvass or the threat of compulsion that has brought about tho change it is not easy to say, but whatever it' is Wellington's future quotas are being considerably augmented as far as enlistments are concerned. Whether these men will all turn up when the call conies is quite another thing, and this is one of the weaknesses, according to the recruiting officers, which the Government would do welt to rectify. Recent expert euces. they state, have proved' that ample men have enlisted for our Reinforcements, lnlt invariably shortages are recorded consequent on certain recruits failin? to answer the call when it came. The following is the record of enlistments at the Town Hall last week :— Monday 89 Tuesday 32 Wednesday 45' ; Thursday 25 i Friday '£\ Saturday 49 Total for week 219 Tho ;i!;oru is me btst week's return for a long time, and both the doctor in attendance (Dr. Be Lautour) and tiie examining dentist uMr. Atkinson) have had tneir hands fuii. Another 40 were enlisted yesterday.

It is understood that the response in connection with tho postal appeal by the local Recruiting Committee 16 very slow. On Saturday it was announced that soino 600. cards had already been returned. That number should have read SCO. Though 13,000 cards were issued on Thursday last, only some 100 havo to far been returned, and instead of there being a big mail for thi* secretary t.wico n. ilnv, the numbpr of card returns has dwindled down to three or four per post. How the cards are being dealt with was illustrated by a conversation which occurred among week-enders in a railway carriage in the 9 a.m. train from. F-iekaknriki. ■ "Get your recruiting card?" tasked one, "Yes." "Send it in?" "Sand it in? Yes, into tho iVr»." "Me, too." As thesf were quite intelligent peopK some of them , occupying good positions in town, if cannot bo expected that tha required information would be forthcoming from these less able to grasp the situation—that only information was wanted. STILL BOOMING IN AUCKLAND. 2759 MEN IN TEN WEEKS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, May 15. Due solely to the efforts of the City Recruiting Committee, .recruiting is still booming in Auckland. Rowland, the Public Service Jeweller and Optician, 90 Manners Street (opp. Everybody's Pictures).—Advt.
