THE "ATTAQUE BRUSQUE."
A MATTiJR OF COST., Apropos of the recent report that tho octogenarinn Field-Marshal von -Haescler has bec-n relfcved of his command before ,Verdun, the "Democrate" (French) relates that during the' grand Imperial manoeuvres in Alsace in 18S9, General von Haesele'r directed the operation in the presence of tho Kaiser. At a given moment, the young and enthusiastic Sovereign placed himself at the head of 15 regiments of cavalry to charge the batteries, which uaturally had to retire, after having copiously "hosed" this mass of cavalry. Returning from this superb charge, William II presented himself before the General and proudly asked him what he thought of it. Von Haeseler replied:— "I don't know, Majesty, whether there would be enough left of those 15 regiments to bury the dead." "After 28 years," rays the "Democrate," "the octogenarian Marshal will be able to make the same observation concerning tho 'attaque brusque' against Verdun."
