Thirteenth at Musketry. The Thirteenth Infantry Eeinforcenicnts were to start their advanced course of musketry at Trentham this morning. It will take them about a week to get through. Next week these troops will be taught something of trench warfare, including bomb-throwing. The Thirteenth will gain a more thorough knowledge of this branch of, training, as the trenches at Trentham have been much enlarged by the Engineers since the Engineers' Reinforcements have been • removed to that camp. As now constituted, these trenches are the replica of a section, of trenches on the Western front, where the New Zealand troops are now engaged. The Thirteenth, therefore, after their training here, will not find any strangeness in their surroundings should they be sent to- France. Discharged Men's Kits. Aft interesting, department of Trentham Camp is that in which the kits of discharged men are sorted out and disposed of, and those left behind by men who aro away on active service are stored. Every week a number of men • are discharged from Trentham for various reasons, but chiefly because they cannot stand the physical strain of the training. The clothes which have been served out to them are often quite good, and some of them, after being washed and cleaned, can be issued again. Other portions cannot be reissued, and are made up into bundles, to be sent to the Headquarters Stores in Wellington, where they are disposed of. The quartermaster-sergeant in charge of this department of the camp is kept busy, and has always a soldier with him, one of whose duties is to remove brass buttons from tunics and replace them with dark ones. Ho also assists in the sorting and packing of the cloHles. The kits of absent soldiers are an interesting collection. These have been left by men who, perhaps, had overstayed leave, and only rejoined on sailing day. When they will get these kits is a question! in tlie meantime they are being held, and aro sent to Bucklo Street in duo . course. There are not many of them at present in the store. Parents and guardians of soldiers under age, who withdraw their \ eons or wards from the, forces after hav- . ing had four months' training are pro- ') bably not aware that it costs a subefan- ! , tial sum to equip, train, and keep each r soldier during that period. It was, no ! doubt, this fact which prompted the ■ issuing of the order that in future thosei • responsible for such withdrawals of men \ should pay for their keep during tho i period of training. Every soldier who goes out of camp for any reason repre- ; senta some wasted effort and financial ,' loss. The department referred to docs its ■ l>est to retrieve some of that loss by saving such of a man's gear as is fit for re? ;■ issue. . N.C.O.'s Allocated.
