SLIGHT SCORE BY THE GERMANS

FRENCH GAINING GROUND ."AT VERDUN REBEL LEADERS SHOT ■ The news from the Russian Headquarters in tie Caucasus indicates that certain difficulties of mountaiu campaigning having been disposed of, the-Russians are now. settling down to tho task of driving the Turks to Bagdad. The retreating enemy has reached the Tigris Valley. On the Eussian European front, the Germans have initiated, with ill-starred attacks, an offensive on the Riga front and along the Dvinsk sectors. Down in the Balkans events; if report speaks truly, havo taken a turn ■which centres attention on Rumania's attitude—tho Bulgarians have.detached 30,000 troops from that frontier and sent them to the Salonika front. In the Western theatre .the Germans continuo to launch desperate attacks on the Verdun sectors, but, despito their efforts,'the French are steadily extending their gains. On the northern flank of the Western ' line, in the vicinity of Vermelles, a sharp attack on the British front resulted in a slight score for the Germans, a score which was pruned down •by the British counter-attack. The Australians have been in action in a : .hand-to-hand fight, but there is nothing to report from the New Zealand lines. .'lt is interesting,to note that the sector which has been entrusted to the men of Anzac is one of tho most famous in the Western line—but the censor declines to. place his finger on, the spot. Greatly to tho relief of supporters of law and order, as opposed to maudlin sentimentality, tho Sinn Fein leaders, Connolly and MacDermott, who signed the rebel proclamation, have- both been executed.
