HOSPITAL BOARD DISCUSSED.

Tho monthly' meeting of the Makara County Council was held yesterday, tho chairmau, Mr. JT.. J. Monaghan, presiding. Tho following were also present r-r Councillors J. H. Haggorty, A. J. Taylor, J'. A. Pyle, S. Bryant, and G. Monk. A letter was received from the -Hospital and Charitable Aid Board; setting out the contributions of the various local bodies for the year 191C-17. Makaru's contribution was said to be £713 16s.—an increase of 12 per cent.-over last year's figures. The county cleric (Mr. W. L. Beech) explained that to meet this payment a rate representing 15.61ths of a penny in the £ would have to be struck" on the present.rating basis.. He-also stated that in 190!) the Makara County Council's contribution was £370 15s. , This showed that in six years tho demand had been practically doubled. The rate of increase represented u tax of 4s. Id, per head cf the population of tlie county. As a result of the subsequent discussion, the following motion by Councillor Haggerty was carried: "That thc.llospital ? D( '.Charitable Aid Board be asked to furnis'i the council with a list" of names of those people receiving charitable aid and patients admitted to the Hospital during the past year. Further, what benefit had been derived by each patient admitted to the. Hospital from within the county boundaries." The chairman was appointed to represent council at the conference of local bodies, which will bo held on May 18, to ! discuss Hospital and, Charitable Aid matters. ,

I'urther complaints regarding the septic tank at Johnsonville were received .Councillor Haggerty moved that, another application be made to' the Health Department to have the Johnsonvilledrain. age inspected and reported on. The motion was carried.

An account amounting to £267 15s. lOd, was received from the City.Council, the amount being the Slcikara Council's shave in the cost of the.maintenance of the Hutt Road. It was decided that payment bs held over pending a receipt of the particulars of the amount. The matter of the Ngahauranga Gorge Road was again considered, and tho niejnbers of tlie Porirua Riding:, with tho chairman, were instructed to interview Messrs. Mace and Nicholson with reference to metal.- Should the arrangement prove unsatisfactory, 'the council will enforce its by-laws relating to-' heavy traffic on the road during the winter months.

Resolutions in connection with tho issue of debentures towards the cost of tho construction of the Hutt Road were con. firmed. •-

A meat export slaughterhouse license was granted to tho Wellington Maat' Export Company. Renewals for slaughterhouss licenses to Messrs.' Dimock and Co. and W. S. Thompson and' Co. were granted, subject to the approval and inspection of the Stock Department.
