[The Gilbert and Illlice Islands, in the "Western Pacific area, incorporated with the Union Group and Ocean Island, are'n colony -comprising 28 islands, with an area of ISO square miles and ,\ population of .1200, including 300 Europeans and 300 Asiatics. The islands were ..proclaimed as a Uritisli protectorate in ISO 2. In 191S.tl.iu native Government's.expressed their desire for formal - annexation, and an Order-in-Council was gazetted on November, li in that year creating the Crown colony, which is under tlio jurisdiction of; Iho High Commissioner of the Western Pacific. Ocean Island, though mentioned in the above messago as being newly incorporated, is mentioned in Hazi'HV Annual as the headquarters of the colony.!
