At the meeting of the Grey County Council oil May 9 ft circular letter was read from the Westland County Council anJnt.work at the Otira Tunnel, and throwing out a suggestion that representatives of all 'local bodies meet at the Town Hall, Groymouth, on May 2-1, tu consider a proposition to invito 15 or 20 influential citizens, of Auckland, and Parliamentarians who were conspicuous in the tunnel agitation,- to pay a visit to the West Coast, so that they could be shown the errors of their.. ways. It was suggested in the latter that it would take .iU7S to pay all the party's expenses, and this would be borne proportionately by tho West Coast local bodies. The matter received'a very short shrift by the Grey County Council (says tho "Grey River Argus"), tho chairman moving that the circular bo received and that no action be taken in sending a representative to tile meeting. Councillor Hannah seconded the resolution; He did not see why the West Coast- bodies should pay the cost of the picnic, especially when -the Railway League of Christchurch were also moving--in the matter. Recently a party of miners -working at . Greenstone, on the. West Coast nf tlio South . Island, sent a samplo of their gold to the Government Assayist'for the purpose 'of determining its . value. The go.ki having been smelted and rolled was returned to the .party, |together. with the assnyer's certificate that the . gold was worth. S-X is. 3d.'per ounce.
