A paper, entitled "Rockdrills," by Jlr. Alex. Dinnie, resident engineer of the Arthur's Pass Timnol, was rend. The paper described the drills in use in constructing tho Arthur's Pass tuiiuei, and tin interesting discussion of a technical character ensued. Mr. Dinnie was thanked for his valuable i>uper. 111'. A. \Y. Newton read a paper, "A Cheap and Simple Method of. Metalling Howls." which dealt with road metalling in the Unit Valley. ' Boulders collected by (he liver wore crushed by a portable plant in tho vicinity of tho road being metalled, and tho cost was less than 3s. a yard. The road gave satisfaction to motorists. An interesting discussion ensued, in tho course of which members gave their experiences of road-nmkiug in dilileront parts of the Dominion. The members inspected the School of Engineering at Canterbury College, the Addington Workshops, and the Drainage Board's sewago farm at Bromley. At the Eiigtoeering Se.hool. Professor Scott s.iid he could not show tho visitors ns much as he would like; as the senior students, about eighty in all, had left In a body for tho front.
