A LONG TRIP TO AMERICA. A rrcss Association, message from CJiristchurch gives an account X the extraordinarily roundabout trip that had to be made by the Toromeo (which arrived at liyttclton ou Monday last), on her last trip from Australia to an American port. To carry the same cargo' across the equathree times was the experience of the steamer Toromeo, now at Lyttelton discharging general merchandise from New York (states tho message). After leaving Port-Pirio (South Australia) with a cargo of some SCCO tons of concentrates, tho Toromeo proceeded to Newcastle and bunkered before sailing for the Panama Canal. She arrived at Halboa on October 12. and it was then learned that owing to tho last great slip in the canal, it was doubtful whether the vessel would be abla to get 'through. She was dotained three weeks in expectation of the waterway being repaired for traffic. The captain eventually put about in order to ■ get to his destination by another route. To go via Cape Horn, it became necessary to cross tho equator. a second time, and the Pacific a third time. After crossing the Atlantic the Toromeo arrived at her destination—Galveston (U.S.A.), on January 4. The reversion to the Cape Horn route involved an additional • journey of some thousands of miles. Tho Toromeo- is not tho only steamer that has had such an experience. The Oonargo and other British steamers bound for North America from Australasia had also to -weather the Horn for a similar reason. MAOTKA FOR SYDNEY. It appears that whilst en route from Launceston, and about 15 miles off Port Phillip Heads, tho vessel refused to answer her helm. ■ A radio Message-'was sent to Melbourne reporting the vessel's plight, and asking for assistance. Tho Union Company s tug Jfyora. was Immediately dispatched for the scene, and with her aid. the Loongana was successfully manoeuvred to the harbour. Subsequent .examination in dock showed that tho Loongana's rudder had been carried away.
