"Compulsion and the Actor" has been the subject of discussion in the English theatrical papers of recent date. In this 3onueotion the "Era," while to 6ome extent deploring the possibilities of the middle-aged artist being called upon to serve with the colours, says: "This means that there will probably be a great defl-i-ieucy of actors of ability; There will always be n sufficiency--of people of the male sex who profess and call themselves -ictqrs; but that is a different thing from beiiig able to act. Theatres will continue alien, and plays will be produced. It is interesting to speculate how they 3 will be cast so as not to 6eem'flat and insipid. At tho present juncture a great many inalo occupations are undertaken by women.. Why should there not spring up a special class of actresses impersonating men in plays? The disguise of sex ou the stage is no novelty. In Shakespeare's time boys represented wQmen, and very successfully."
