VERDUN BATTLES.
GERMAN OFFENSIVE 'PENDING IN RUSSIA Close upon the belated; account of the arrival of the Anzac men on. the Western front in France, comes the news of their first real taste of trench fighting. The Germans signalised their first attack on the colonial line.with a terrific bombardment, compared with which the work of the Turkish- 1 artillery on Gallipoli was a mere circumstance. The German infantry attack which followed the bombardment was a luckless enterprise, and the Huns got a warm reception. There were some casualties on the Anzac side, but no details.. The Germans lost far more heavily. The German attacks.on the Verdun front are- still beiiig maintained, though .. ■ the artillery bombardment—by the most powerful guns of the war—is. said to be waning. ' Reports have been coming in from the Russian theatre of great preparations by the Germans for a big ofiensiro' in that direction. .: In. Committee on.the" Military Service Bill a motion to include the Irish . evoked a statement by Mr. Asquith. '
