VICTORIA COLLEGE

STUDENTS AND THE WAR

The eighteenth.annual meeting of the Victoria University Collego Students / Association, is to bo held this evening.; „ The annual report of the association states:—' "The unprecedented state of the world s affaire has left a mark which can. be plainly discerned in the record of the activities of your association during tho past year. The customary activities have of necessity, been largely curtailed, and others have in some degree been siihIstituted for them. Stnoe the last annual general meeting a very largo number or the association's members have entered the service of their King, and have either left these shores or have gone into -teaming at the' various military camps. the Professorial BoaTd and College Council have decided to erect a roll of honour Ward to contain the names of students and ex-students who have volunteered. During the. year a considerable number of names ha'vß been added to the list of volunteers, but this list is not and cannot be made complete and accurate unti the Base Records Department's nouJinal roll is to hand. So soon as the Toll'« received, the completion of the list can be proceeded with. In the meantime ■we desire to-place on record tho faot that the number >of students and ex-students of the. college who .have gone, on active service is now considerably bveY 200. Various sums of -money have been raised by members of the association for patriotic purposes, and good work has been done by the women in making u'p material for the soldiers.' From the method' of collection, by card system—monthly contributions of small sums by students —the sum of „40 15b. was' raised. / All the various sums so raised were merged into a General Patriotic Fund, which was disbursed as lollops:—Partly in the purchase of • the rhaturials made' up' by the women;.„So was donated thereout to the Y.M.C.A. for the .purpose of its ao. Kvities at the front, and there is now a balance of _21' 18s. 10' d.' in hand. Pursu. nnt to tho direction of a special general meeting'of your association, held in Juno last, tie. sum of .'„2O was donated out of the fmids of your association, to tho Mayor's Patriotic Fund for. Wounded Soldiers "and Sailors. .Your committee also arranged for the collection of a large caso full' bfj clothing,. which was dispatched to nn English university fupd for the mlief of Belgian'refugees; . : "Your committee decided not to hold th» usus'l capping fostivities last year, owing to the fact that our troops were recently landed on Gallipoli, and that casualty lists wero. commencing to bo published, It was: felt that the obau- , dphment of the celebrations was in. keeping with tho situation .it tb,e'timo, • aud was a mark -of rcspp.ct for comrades in action, The otrepony of presentation of graduates /was held in the large Towu Hall under the joint control of the College Council, tho Professorial Board, and your association. The ceremony wan oven more.successful than that held the previous year. . Towards the end. of Au; gust a small.entertainment was arranged by. .your. committee, and held, in tho gymnasium. The entertainment was sue cessful in aH ways, and resulted in the sum of _2G os. fid.. being raised, which sum was used for the patriotic purposes above referred to. •

"Sjnco , tho last annual general meet, ing, your committee has dispatclied to Djudents and es-stndonls at tho front unreal? cpiitaining a 'Spike' and a writing wallet to tho number of approximately 150. " Yoiir 'committee recommends that fue incoming committee continue to forwafd copius of the' -'Spike' to thoso whoso addresses can be ascertained.-The membership of your association now stands at. 1911, which, considering the bir-l-umstapees, may be deemed most satisfactory. The Students' Association of, the four colleges decided not to hold the annual 'Easter tournamont, Which would this. year.'have taken place'at'J Junedin. There will not, therefore,- bo anything on which your dolegates will require to report. '.' Your conunitteo has v£iy great

pleasure in reporting that the nominee of - 1 this tollego for the Rhodes SchblaTshipMr. Athol Hudson—was awarded tho scholarship" for the year. Mr. Hudson is to bo congratulated on behalf of youi 'Association for the great honour and dis tiuction'he .has brought to himself anil to the college. In this connection again the circumstances of the' times rendered ft undesirable to hold any formal function for the entertainment of the scholarship candidates, Mr. G. G. G. Watson, M.A;,.LL,B„.has been nominated, for life, membership of your association. : "In . acuordance'.with the scheme passed ' 'at the last annual general meeting, your ' committee has awarded university college ' blazers to the following members of the ' respective clubs mentioned. It has been j unable to award blazers.to all the.clubs ] provided for, in the scheme, owing to : :no'minations not having been received froiii all of these. Cricket Club AwardsMessrs, P. li. Broad, A. E. Caddick,' A. W. Duncan, and F. Joplin. Athletic Club Awards—D;.o'Sullivani 1. C, Robinson, E. H. Luke, H. .Williams, A. B. .Sievwright, and R. V. Kay. Hockey Club Awards— E. Howntrce, G. S. Strack, C. H. E. Strack, N. A., Fodei), S. ,J.'Castle, and J. C. M'Dbwall.' Tennis Club AwardsMisses "E. Cook, F. W. Cooke, E. Hare, G.-M. Lawry; M. H. Sievwright, Messrs. C. F. Atmore, li. C. Clayton, li. A. Henderson, and H. Williams. It is further pointed out that certain students otherwise eligible . have' not. received blazers on account of not being members of the. association for the period'.in question.. ."The usual two issues of ■ the 'Spike' were published; at a loss of 413 18s. 9d. for the year. Your committee, after conferring with the editor (Mr. Broad), has decided to make certain improvements in the binding, and printing of the future numbers of. the magazine, and has also decided to have .a. complete set of '-the: magazine bound whilolt is still possible to obtain- the necessary back numbers. ■ "Your, committee, has ,had under its consideration- a scheme for holding; 60on after the end. of the war, : a reunion of all past and present students of the' college. .Such reunion-would lie on the lines ol a series of sports contests and social functions, somewhat similar to thos9-held at tho university tournaments. ' Your cemmittee feels very strongly that such k gathering would-not only be most enjoyable for.all those taking part in it, but, would be of the greatest value tothe college, and would do .much, to foster the true . college.' spirit, ,which' is so-vital to our v studcnt life. Acordingly your committee- recommends. that the incoming committee he directed immediately to take steps .to evolve .a complete scheme for holding such reunion, for although the actual, event may .not come within its term of office, nevertheless such a-gather-ing can bo made- a success only by a tremendous amount of preliminary-planning and organising. The Graduates' Association of the college is willing to co-operate with.your.association, and.it is suggested that a Joint Committee of -the two bodies should be set up to control tho reunion. "In conclusion, your committee desires .to impress on all members, and indeed on all students, tho absolute necessity at the present time of each and all doing their utmost to keep going all student activities, so that the traditions that have been built up in the past may be preserved and enhanced. In this respect, never in the history of the college was such an opportunity presented to-first and second year students; it is to be hoped the opportunity will bo seized by theni."
