The Labour Conference has passed a, motion opposing conscription for servico abroad, and directing all '- unions and leagues to oppose Labour members supporting conscription, in order to make the matter the clearest issue between the forces of Democracy and Despotism, "FREE SPEECH, FREE PRESS, FREE ASSEMBLAGE." May 9, 10.30 p.m.) Melbourne, May 9. ■ Senator Pearce, replying to the resolutions of the Inter-State Conference in favour of free speech, a free Press, a •free assemblage, and also against conscription, said: "We have agreed to the censors taking action in order to prevent speeches and writings detrimental to recruiting being published or circulated. The combined Broken Hill unions have passed a resolution to meet the inauguration of any form of conscription by calling on the workers throughout Australia lo "down tools" at 21' hours' notice. The Labour Conference has unanimously resolved in favour of making tho Necessities Commodities Commission a permanent auxiliary of the Arbitration Court for tho purpose of limiting profits. A committee has been appoiutikl to submit a scheme to the Government.
