FRENCH VESSEL REPORTS AN ATTACK CRUISERS SEARCHING By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyrignt ■■■■■•■ Washington, May 8. The naval Attacho of tlie'British Embassy at Washington is investigating a report that two German commerce raiders are at largo in the Atlantic, off tho Azores. It is believed that two submarines acompany the raiders. The crew of the Fabro line steamer Venezia, on arrival from Bordeaux, asserts that the raiders fired shots at their vessel, but that the Venezia escaped. The Attache has notified Halifax, and British cruisers, will make a search.
Later. The British Attache announces that he is unable to find any trace of any commerce raiders. He disbelieves the report. THE REPLY TO THE GERMAN NOTE AMERICA ACCEPTS • ■ New York, May 'B.' A Jteuter's message from Washington says that the American Note to Germany accepts the assurance of the altered submarine policy, relying on' its scrupulous execution and maintenance of good relations. The 'Note refuses flatly to consent to n now policy contingent on the conduct of any other Government. ' , Washington, May 8. Another Note is to be sent to Germany, informing her that if the instructions to submarine commanders are observed, diplomatic relations: will remain unbroken, but pointing out that the United States cannot allow Germany to dictate Americau negotiations with Britain. Tin her reply to the United / States, Germany offered to order her submarine commanders not i'j sink any ships anywhere unless after due warning and. safeguarding- the crews, the only exception being if ships attempted to escapo or offer resistance. Thia offer, however, was conditional on the United States cooperating with Germany to restore the freedom of the seas, as the United States had suggested previously in Notes \v the British Government. A wireless message from San Diego announces the first entry of the Canadian Navy into the war. The cruiser Rainbow captured two prizes, the Pacific auxiliary schooners Leonoro and Oregon. German ownership is suspected in ea6h case. IThe Oregon is a wooden three-mast schooner of 343 tons, owned by J. L. Krononberg Company, Coos Bay, Oregon. There ia no Leonpre in Lloyd's Register, but a Lenora, a Mexican vessel, owned by F. Jebsen, and a Leonor, Manila, owned by E. Herbert.]

GERMAN SUBMARINE MINED AND SUNKAmsterdam, May 8. It is reported tha~ a German submarine was mined and sunk at Varna. Many of the crew were saved by a destroyer.
