A Soldier's Thanks... Miss Sybil Nathan, hon. secretary of the Women's Committee of the British Reel Cross Society and Order of St. John. (Wellington Branch), has received tho following letter of acknowledgment from n soldier of tho .British Forces at Salonika, who received early in March the gift of a school note-book, containing 100 pages. From the letter can be gathered how badly the soldiers needed such things. It run 6as follows: — "Gratitude- impels. the writer to acknowledge the gift and greetings received in tho form of a school note-book of 100 pages. The article was much' wanted, and difficult to acquire among the hens and the glens of Macedonia. No sooner had I been received temporarily for duty with tho New Zealand Stationary Hospital than seme felt wants were supplied. There were many things of advantago to men who were returning from hospital'to their battalions iu the line, and as a. Scot who has received. kindness from loyal lielpors in New Zealand I thank you and your fellow.workers most warmly." .

Thorntion Cronuet Club. The Thorndon Croquet Club brought its season to a close on' Saturday, April 29, when the final of the handicap eingles for /Messrs. E. W. Mills's trophy mallet was played, Mrs. O'Donncll being the wim\er, with Mrs. J. E. Fulton as runner-up, the latter securing the captain's prize. On Friday last the members of the club-met in the pavilion, when a very pleasant afternoon was spent, the chief feature the distribution of trophies presented for various matches during the season, tho president, Mrs. T. Young, officiating. Tho handicap doubles, senior and junior, for trophy given by the president, was won by Mrs. O'Dohnell and Miss Davy. In the A-and B section matches, Miss Williams won in A section, and Miss Wilson, coached by Mrs. Hamilton, the B section, thus securing prizes presented by Mrs. Hiley and Mrs. Watt respectively. Mrs. A. W. Young won the handicap singles and trophy given by the hon. secretary (Mrs. Geo. Johnson), and Mrs. O'Donnell and Mrs. Gibbs won tho first doubles match of tho season. Tho AVounded Soldiers' Fund in connection with the club has proved its popularity by ilio fact that tho sum of over £30 has been raised, which will enable the members to present two "Fowler's" patent cots, fully equipped, to tho, Military Hospital as their first contribution from the iyud. During the afternoon a'competition was'held for Mrs. O'Donnell's trophy mallet, which,realised £2 10s. in aid of tho AVounded Soldiers' Fund, and the hon. secretary was the recipient pS a beautiful cut-glass rose bowl from the members of tlw club.

The engagement is announced of Miss Ivy Eleanor Tait, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Tait, of "Cardiff," Fcatherstoii, to Corporal John Malcolm M'Lean, N.Z.M.R., 12th Reinforcements, second son of Mr. AVilliam M'Lean, of Dunedin.

The engagement is announced of Quartermaster-Sergeant Alan Ironmonger, 13th Reinforcements (late of the Bank of New Zealand), only son of Mr. and Mrs. Ironmonger, Hmitervillc, to Miss Dulcie Howie, eldest daughtci of Mr. J. S-. Howie, also of Hunterville.

Members of the Spinsters' Club are holding an "At Home" on _ Saturday afternoon next, at the residence of Mrs. fatten, 54. Brougham Street. Admission will be one shilling, and there will be music, afternoon tea, etc. The proceeds arc to go to the Soldiers' Comforts Fund.

Miss Sybil Nathan, hon. secretary of tho VoMien's Committee (formerly the Militaiy Hospital Guild) has received a letter lrnm bieiii.-Colonel il'Gavm, oE No. i New Zealand Stationary Hospital, acknowledging the receipt on March 14 of oight cases of hospital • goods.Another letter was received, written' on March 20, from Ismailia, in which he acknowledged tho receipt of four hampers of clothing, lite, 'ilie articles were regarded as being most useful, and Lieut.-Colonel M'Gavin wished to thank tlie guild oh behalf of all concerned for the goods they had sent.' The hospital, he further stated, was working amongst colonial troops in. Egypt.

Miss Borlaso and her committee are organising a "holiday dance'' for young people, iiliich is to be held in the Goring Street Hall on Thursday, May 11, and later, on May 20, another will bo given principally for officers and men m camp at Trentham. ■ Mrs. Noblc-Campbc'll passed through Maste'rton last week on her way from Christchurch to Napier, where she intends to spend the winter. . The officers in camp at Featherston gave a very; successful dance last evening. Mr. and Mrs. W. 11. Jackson (Jlasterton) are visiting AVellingt'on. They return shortly to tho AVairarapa. Nurso Irene Hood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hood, of Masterton, is sister-iu-charge of the Anglo-American Hospital in Cairo. '. Considerable interest, is being taken in . the apple-pie competition in connection with the apple show. The Mayor, ess wishes it to be understood that the pies with "short" crusts, and "puff" pastry will be judged separately, and also that duo allowance will be made for those sent in yesterday, and those freshly brought in to-day; points in each ease will be considered 60 as to do justice to ail.

Letters wero received by yesterday's mail at the Town Hall from Lady GodIcy, also several commanding officers, sending hearty thanks in appieciation of tho goods sent out by the Countess of Liverpool Fund, officers, and workers. Lady Godlcy received 144 tins of sweets, also many balaclavas and socks. She gives a cheerful account of her many patients, and Eays that the baths and massage havo done them much good. Thanks were received for tho cases of personally-addressed parcels which the committee carefully packed, and also for the eases Of gift parcels, which ;will be distributed as requires. Notes of thanks' and appreciation also camo from ■some of tho transport ships.

Its object was to commemorate and to perpetuate tho alliance with Russia, as it was deemed that tho psychological moment fhiid arrived for a rapprochement between $lo two peoples. The main objects of the society wero to 'promote and maintain a thorough and permanent and sympathetic understanding between tho people of tho two Erunires and to disseminate knowledge of oach other in simple and popular ways by of social intercourse, literature,, art, .l»b?ts, customs, pastimes, etc. In. a brfel sentence, it was to be an effort to .■establish a mutual friendship in the widest and frankest sense.
