TOWN PLANNING
The annual meeting of the Greater ■' Wellington Town Planning Municipal Electors' Association- was held last evening. 1 The Hon. J. Cr. W. Aitken f presided, and there was a good attendance, including several city councillors! The annual report, which was adopt- j ed, stated:— '•j/indeavours' wero made to hold' a •series of monthly" debates during last;. ; winter, but owing' to other important matters arising out:of the present war it was found impossiblo'.to do so. "Municipal* Elections.—The Association again endeavoured; to. secure tho return of suitable canAdatcs. for the of- ; fices of-Mayor, members of the" .City j Council, Harbour Board, arid Hospital '; and Charitable Aid-Board. The Asso-' cia'tion issued a platform which -the! candidates selected agreed tp support. ; The. result of the election was again highly favourable to -the Candidates supported by the Association. 'Town Planning.—As* the.result of a : considerable amount' of work a- sug« i gested Town Planning -Bill: was,: pre- ; pared, and submitted to the Hon. G. \V. Russell.' "The""Minister stated to ! the deputation which waited upon : hiui that au endeavour would be made : at a very early date to bring, a Town - Planning Bill before the House. Your ', Association has been in communicationwith the Auckland and Dunedin Town A Planning Associations in reference to the" proposed Bill- - - . ■ "Crawford- Road. —Your committee ascertained when the Crawford Road work was commenced" that it was in-,' tended to provide for a narrow road' ; way. As a result of "your Association's endeavours the road was increased to ■its present width. ■ "Amongst other matters--that receiv- : ed the attention of your association were the following:—lmproving Oriental Bay, Courtenay Place Reserve, Basiu Reserve, clearing away, of . rubbish tip, Hutchinson Road.
"Your committee is .strongly of the • opinion, that Tio work, costing £10,000 •; or over should bo proceeded' with, whe-C tlier to be paid for out of revenue' or otherwise, without the sanction of the ratepayers, and that- such principle should apply to any existing works for which tlic council have not at the pre- , sent time obtained either. an Order-in--Council or Legislative authority.
