HAWKE'S BAY J.C. MEETING SASANOFF WINS THE STAKES, 'GREAT. DUEL BETWEEN CHORTLE AND KOOYA. By Telegraph.- Special Correspondent. Hastings, May (i. The second day of the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting was favoured by hue weather, a large attendance, and splendid racing. Nearly all tlio finishes wero very close. Tho sum of .£21,972 was put through the totalisator, as against =£23,320 for the same day last yeai. The total for tho meeting was •£39,575.
Sleight of Hand was tho only withdrawal from tho Hack Hurdles, for which the first days' winner was the best supported. He began smartly, and jumping better to-day, led from "tho beginning of tho last circuit. Jem mado a much potter showing to-day, and was ' only beaten by a narrow margin, after being tailed olf in,the- first part. Czaronus was close up third, and then came Sensitive. \y. Bush, who rode tho winner, handled hun well, and his exhibition was in marked contrast to somo of the other riders. .Toki, Whakahoki, and Hygia were preferred in that order on the machine for tho Okawa Hack Handicap, in which the apprentices were seen in the saddle. Tho Rarahiu filly jumped out in front, and was not headed on the journey./ Grand Idea kept her company for six furlongs, when thp field bunched. Hygia finished tho best, and won by a length from Toki, with Spain coming fast in third place. Had he began better Toki might have beaten the winner.
IlytJiread was withdrawn from tho Juvenile Handicap, leaving ten runners. Iho first day's winnor, Sarah Grand, was tho favourite, but a bad run spoilt any chance she had, and at tho finish the Napier mare was in fourth place. AVhen a furlong had been covered Tino Atua' and _Sunny Climes wero showing the way to Hyllus, Tho last named got up on the fence in tho straight, and. ridden right out, won by a neck from Beltane, who was a similar distance in front of bunny Climes. The winner and runnerup both showed improved form. The Hawko's Bay Stakes went to the favourite, Sasanoff, who had bad luck at the barrier, and then came on and won. In the birdcage ho and Hyttus had nipsc admirers, but tho beautiful preliminary of tho Martian gelding gained him many additional friends. At the barrier Hyttus got off well in advance of the others, wlulo another horse jumped across Sa'sanoff, and at the end of a furlong he was forty or fifty yards behind Hyttus, with the field strung out between tho pair. Hyttus was going well in front passing tho railway bend, but by tho time the straight was entered Sasanoff ran into second place, and over the last furlong ho challenged, and, wearing down Hie'leader, he won by * bare length. Bjonicbovg was third. The/trio finished in the order anticipated on the machine. Tho winner put up a sensational performance to get up from' where he did, and though Hyttus is obviously not himself, for no horse could give him that start if he wero at his host, still the winner is a very smart youngster, and should bo .a. very formidable Derby horss next season. Jt is understood that ho accompanies Eligible to Eandwick.
■ ■ The _ Burko Memorial Handicap was one of the finest races over seen on tho Hastings course. Although heavilv bandicapped, the Easter Handicap winner Chortle was tho public elect, and after a great finish he was beaten by tho narrowest of margins by Kooya. PursclUler; after delaying the start, was again left, and'passing tho stand Lady Louisa, Gold Soult, aud Orleans were leading a packed field, with tho favourite in the middlo, and Indigo and Balboa well back; Down the back Orleans lost his position, while Lmporador moved up in. behind Ludy Louisa and Gol'd Soult, with Itupahu handy. Rounding tho bend Chortlo improved hi s position, and at the distance his victory was proolaimed, but Kooya, finishing strongly on,tho outside, headed him fifty yards off the post. Tho favourite came on again and the pair passed the post locked together. The jud"s'9 decision went to the light-weight by a half hoad. Lady Louisa was a length away and then came ltiiDalm and Gold Soult. Indigo was the last to finish. A bad mil going ouf of tlio straight His first time may have cost the. favourite the race. The honors of the contest are certainly witli him, as ho was conceding tho winner 281b., and the pair put up a record for the Hastings course. Carlysian was backed down to a short price in the Scurvy Hack Handicap awl jumping, out smartly, ho was not headed, though at the finish he only won by a head from Maryland, who was well placed throughout. King of Athol was eloss. up, and then came Aurore, who started on the extreme outside, and Atuatoro. Tho winner who was formerly owned, bv Mr. f. H. Lowry has been most'consistent of late, having scored at the Rangitikei, Auckland, and Hastings meetings. Only five runner,, contested the Open Hurdles the winner turning up in tho good-staying Sir Laddo gelding, Braeburn with Woolloomooloo and Morning in the places. The winner is well forward, aud may win a steeplechase early in the season. He is stated to he a good jumper over country. The concluding evont was a good betting race, several of thp runners being well fanoied. Marimba began smartly as usual, but, in tho straight Multiplication ca T l l< ?, Wl " 1 a strol, S run. and won nicelv.
