NATIONAL APPLE SHOW

THE JUDGES'APPOINTED. Among the passengers' who, arrived by the Maori yesterday morning from Christchurch was Mr J. 'Longtony managing director of the New Zealand Fruit Growers' Federation. Mr. J. liongton's business is in connection with the National Apple Show and tho Conference of -Fruit-growers which is to open in tho Town Hall to-morrow. Tho judges appointed for the show are: Messrs. J. "Hanlon (Whangarei), D. Fry (Nelson), and W. J. Courtier (Canterbury). Mr. Hanlon is a member of the Royal Horticultural Society, and; was judge at the- Crystal Palace Fruit Exhibition and at tho Great Fruit Show at the Paris- Exhibition -in 1900. Mr. Hanlon :was tho first fruit export to be employed by the New' Zealand Government.' Mr. Fry is an orchaTdist and well-known local judge. Mr. Courtier is Government Pomologist for Canterbury, and was select-, ed by the Department of Agriculture and Fruit Federation.

The show will be. opened by the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, Minister"of Agriculture, to-morrow afternoon. The City Council has generously 'placed tho hall at the disposal of the promoters, and fruit has been coming in daily for the various exhibits and for sale. Fruii; will be on sale and exhibition, and in the latter division it is understood that there is very keen'rivalry between' districts, .mid. notably between Nelson and Otago. Fruit will be shown also from Port •Albert," Hawke's Bay, Canterbury; Gisborne, Timaru, and elsewhere. AH money taken at tho doors is to bo devoted to whatever patriotic.fund the City Council directs; < The' Mayoress, Sirs. J. P. Luko, has arranged the afternoon tea, profits of which will be given to the Lady Liverpool Fund for providing comforts for the" troops, and she has also arranged-for tho'distribution of a book of 200 recipes for utilising the e-pple for food. Fruit sold; will be delivered free Ji the City and suburbs: The larger part, of tho fruit shown will be for sale. - ■.".,..'.,-... '
