The Otago Law Society have received from Home a portrait of' the late Sir Joshua Williams in his dress as a Privy Councillor. In order that the public may have an opportunity of seeing the portrait it will he hung for a time in tho water-colour room of the Public Art Gallery. Then it will be placed in the, library at the Supreme Court. Lieutenant Stcnhouse, commander of' the Aurora, sent a telegram to'the< Prime Minister this -week stating that he will probably visit England, return-\ ing to rejoin his ship when it. leaves about November for the Antarctic to relieve the waiting explorers. Dr. E. W. Sharman, of Auckland,' who has been in charge of the medical cervices' at the Rangiotu Canip for somo time past, has been appointed principal medical officer of a transport. The rank of major has been conferred upon him. The Rev. Father Barra, who hag been associated -with the work of St. Joseph's Church, Buckle Street, for some fivo or six years, has been transferred to Reefton, and leaves for that parish in a few days' time. His* place at St. Joseph's will ho taken by the Rev. Father O'Connor, of Wellington South. i Information -has been received in. Wellington that Lient.-Col. J. Gethin Hughes, D.5.0., C.M.G. (son-m-law of Mr. Robert O'Connor, of The Terrace),, is expected to rorarn to New Zealand, about the end of next month. Colonel Hughes went away as staff officer to Major-General Sir Alex. Godley, Main. Body, and was afterwards placed in command of the Canterbury Battalion, He was-invalided to England, and only .recently .came out of hospital there after four months' His name ■■ appears in a recent Court Circular gnv ing a list of those officers who appear* ed before the King; for the investiture of the Orders,into which they had been admitted. ■ .
Sergeant-Major D. W. Healey, who after serving in the trenches at GalhV poli for eight months, was invalided to England, is now on his way to New Zealand. Before his departure he was entertained at supper by his old regi- ■ meiit,' : tho North Lancashire. Ser- r geant-Major Healey, who left with the Main Body from New Zealand, was, quartermaster-sergeant to the Otago, Battalion. j A presentation has been made to Mr. ; P. \W Lamb by members of the staff of the Defence Stores, Buckle Street, on the' occasion of his leaving for the country., The presentation took the form of a handsome set of carvers and a gold-"' mounted cigarette holder. j On Wednesday evening a presentation was made by the staff of .the Defence Stores. Buckle Street, _ tor Major O'Sullivan, who has justi been promoted. The presentation took tho form cf two divan chairs 'and pair of binoculars in case. Many n:' bers-of the staff who had workedder Major O'Sullivan expressed ii regret at his leaving the Dcfe;.Stores,, and took, the opportunity of acknowledging the kindly treatment they had always received at his hands.: '
