POULTRY INDUSTRY
(By Chantecler.)
Change of Name. . 111 an interview with Mr. J. B. Mcrrett, our reporter gathered some interesting information on the prospective change, of name of one of the varieties of_ poultry. "You will have noticed," said Mr. Merrctt, "that the Australians iiavo suggested tliat the name Anzac should be given to one of our birds, and .while there aro many of our native birds fitted to wear tho glorious honour we would not care to part with tho associatioiis'Tof their names. We ± '.7 av ® 110 coniDunqtion if we look into tho r>o 11 Itry world. So for as I c°i\' -V® J- Castle, secretary or the Wellington Zoological Society, who first suggested, the >binl. In Saturday's Dominion lie says: 'Australians ?, ir . lv united to scale Galhpoli qutl try to open a way to Coil' stantinople. By deeds of valour unrivalledl they glorified themselves together. In tile memorable word Anzac their initials are appropriately Mended. A 'bird to perpetuate tliat name...worthilj should -be neither a native of Australia nor a native of New Zealand. Knowing, then, that the Turks never had any right to claim Maloagrina, Gallipavo as their bird; that tho d'eeds. that raised tho-name Anzac into prominence were magnificent; and that the bird misnamed the turkey glows with magnificence everywhere, and everywhere smokes in sacrifice for tho welfare of tho world, the handsome bird too long misnamed, if not nick-named, the turkey shall, in my ornithological notes in-future, be worthily crowned with the honoured name of Anzac.'
"I quite agree-with Mr. Castle,"- said Mr. Merrott, "our grand old turkey should not boar the infliction of a name so closely allied to our enemies. It was never intended it should he, hut one of those strange combinations of circumstances by which many inames camo down to us lias given us the word key.""Can you give tlio origin of tho word?" inquired tho reporter. "No, it is enchroudcd in mystery/' said Mr. Merrett. "Some writers claim it derived its name from a supposed reseiublanco to tho Turkish costumo of a red fez, as illustrated by tho carunculations of the turkey, which doubtless are very suggestive, 1 Others ascribe tho word tp (v corruption of torquoise, as suggested by tho bluish cariinculstious about the head. Another school of writers point out that the name of "Turk" is applied to anyone with a domineering disposition and pompous appearance, and that it "gradually became attached to 'tho turkey cock in its modified form.- The bird came from America, and no one disputes its country of origin. There is a characteristic that is'not mentioned-by Mr. Castlo which should still further entitle tho bird'* to the honoured name. In the season tho females hide from their mates, and it is then the gobblers get into conflict. A wild, turkey-cock fight usually ends in ■death to one oft the combatants. With heads bleeding they seek for the opportune' time to throw each other. With body feathers ruffled, tail outspread, wings lowered, and- a tenacious lyjld \vith the beak, thejj struggle on. Should one lose his hold his chanco is gone. As he is thrown to tho ground his opponent strikes him violently with spurs and wings until he is dead. Tho moment the bird is dead the conqueror treads him under foot. Thoro is 110 'hatred in the turkey cock. Ho is gallant brave, and these arc tho two outstanding characteristics of tlie All- - by which designation the turkey should.lionceforth be known for all time, at least in the British Empire."
Loyal co-operation. At tho recent conferenco the subject of co-operation was' well discussed and elicited some excellent suggestions. . Tho difficulty in. the way of successful cooperation is, want;, of loyalty among scarcely-expect out-' "side producers to throw in their lot with others .when such slipshop.ihetliods are adopted by exponents of the scheme.'; The Palmerston North Egg Circle birtd' Ihoir members by a legal document that i»ll supplies must go through their agent for at least one year. The Otago Egg. Circle ,now being formed, has tho' following. 1 excellent rule: —Rule 23 i ''Each member shall agree to send all eggs for wholesale disposal through tho circlo._ No member to hawk eggs, or sell direct to grocers." Producers can. never secure a solid co-operation unless they arc loyal in.their support. No agent can successfully do business on behalf of pi'odueers- unless-he can count ou regular supplies.; Tho, whole business becomes djsorgariised when producers have a free hand to trado out?, .sido-tho. agency. A. great deal of com-plaint-is made "at . certain-..producers holding' out .from | a ■; centralisation scheme, but- -there - are. reasons for it. As Mr. lteilly pointed out at the conference, nearly every co-operative'" scheme jjails through want of unity among producers themselves.
