ELECTRIC LIGHTS FOR HULKS. Arrangements have been mad<j by which the Blackball Coal Company's hulks BlackWall, Elinor Vernon, and Prince of Wales, stationed at Wellington, will be lighted by electric light in. future. The idea is to provide efficient lighting in tho holds at night time. The present method of. 1 lighting hulks is deemed unsatisfactory, hence the now departure. The Blackwali will be the first hulk to be fitted.
NOTICE TO MARINERS. The Marino Department has issued tho following notice to mariners:— The -Wanganui Harbour Board have notified that the harbour dredge is at present working in the river below Lryulguard Bluff, and that vessels should pass on the side showing two-black balls vertical by day and two red lights vertical by night. Tho two mooring lines which aro across the river -will be slacked down when tho vessels are.passing. Charts, etc., affected: Admiralty Chart, No. 2054; "New Zealand Pilot." WAVERLEY IN COMMISSION. Tho insulation anil overhaul of tho 6tcamer Waverley, which have been going on at the Wool Wharf for some linio payt, are now nwuing completion,, and the vchsel will bo dispatched for Patea to-day on her initial trip in the interests of thePatea Farmers' Co-operative Freezing Company. A crew was signed on yesterday. Tho freezing machinery, which has been installed by Messrs. J. Chambers and Bon, of this city, will be under-tho care of Mr. W. Morrison, who will accompany tho Waverley as engineer. In addition to tho insulating of her holds, the vessel has been thoroughly overhauled, the accommodation cleaned and painted, and various much-necded minor repairs executed. Captain Fisk, lato of the Aorerc, will act as master of tlio vessel, and Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull will be local agents. NIKAU FOR OVERHAUL. The Anchor Line's Nikau is due hero from Kelson this morning with passengers only. She will be placed on the Patent Slip later in the day and will sail for Nelson as usual at 2 p.m.' on Saturday.
. SDRDGA.REPORTED. . Continuing her journey from New York to Wellington, the Barber "liner Suruga left Panama last Sunday, according to a cable messago received yesterday by Messrs. G. .11. Scales and Co., local agents. Tho Suruga should reach Wellington in about 24 days' time, and proceeds irom this port to Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. This reference to tile vessel's leaving Panama is interesting, in so far as tho Suruga is one of the first vessels bound from NewYork to New Zealand to use the. Canal 6ince its reopening after being blocked for 60. long. . The Suruga. is not unknown in Wellington,. having visited this port last year, being one of the .first of the Barber Line to come to New Zealand from New York. KITTAWA FOR THE COAST. Arrangements liavc been made by the Union Company to dispatch the Kittawa .to Westport antl Greymouth from Welling. ton, at 5 p.m. on Monday, with general cargo. Her consignments will be received till 3 p.m. on that day, and Hokitika cargo will be included.

Captain Jensen, master of the coastal steamer Tainui, is leaving shortly on an extended holiday visit to Melbourne. During liis absence his place Will bo filled by Captain .Berg, master of the steadier Wetere. Mr. M'Pherson, chief officer ot the Monowai, having come ashore on leave, Mr. Dalgleish. and Mr. G. D. Frassr, second and third officers respectively, havo been temporarily promoted a. step.
The Government steamer Hincmoa will leave Wellington for Karori Rock and"other Cook Strait lighthouses at 11 a.m. to-aa'y. She will return here on Wednesday next, aiid will then be placed on the Patent Slip. On Monday, May 8, the Hinemoa. will leave on her periodical trip to northern lighthouses. - Late on Tuesday afternoon the New Zealand Shipping Company's Waimate arrived at Auckland from St. John, via- Australian ports. Departure should be taken for Wellington iu a few days' time. Phosphate-laden from Kobe the Japanese eten.mer Kyoto Maru arrived 1 at Tiinaru at 5.40 p.m. on Tuesday. The vessel will subsequently call at'another southern port but whether, or not Wellington will bo visited is not known at present. Continuing her journey from New York, the Darber liner Dongarra. is expected to leave Auckland to-day for Wellington. She should reach here on Sunday. To continue Home loading, the C. and D. liner Niwaru will arrive at Wellington from Wanganui oil' Tuesday next. It •is expected that the . schooner Elsie Mary will get away from Wellington for Auckland to-morrow. The Eiverina is due here from Lyttelton this morning, and will bo dispatched for oydney a,t 5 p.m. . An arrival at Napier on Tuesday evening was- the collier Kaituna, from Newcastle. With 220 tons of Dunedin cargo on board, the Huddart-Parker , steamer Victoria .is duo hero from Lyttelton this morning. She will sail for Auckland, via East Coast ports, this evening, and is scheduled to leave tho northern port for Sydney on Monday, 8. Overhaul to tho Himitangi will not be completed before the latter end of next week. Consequently the vessel' 6 departure' from Wellington fof the Chatham Islands has licen postponed. The surveying yacht Carnegie is expected •to sail from Lyttelton on. May 10 for Pago (Samoa), Guam (Ladrone Islands), J)ufcch Harbour (Alaska), San Diego (California.), tlienco on to Easter Island, and, via. the. Panama Xanal, to New York. Captarn Ault hopes to arrive there about the early part of May next year.
