CIVILITY IS CHEAP.

Sir, —I am reluctantly compelled to make n complaint respecting the intelligence Department, of that, like tin Town Hall, delightfully out-of-the-way Uccruitiug Office, at Buckle Street. Being personally' very anxious to know .whether—(l) The Taranaki recruits went into camp at Trcntlnm tho same evening as they arrived in town; or (2) whether, instead, they slept at the barracks, 1 at last located the RecruitingOffice. At the inquiry room 110 one was present. I-therefore approached a man in khaki, of rather rotund figure, seated at a table with a big'ledger or record book in front of him. In reply to m.v questions, he assured me that the 'i'araliaki men never slept at the barracks. This, ' I subsequently discovered (at night), was quite incorrect, lie also referred me to a Mr. Bishop, .Railway Transport officer, ,«t Lanibtou Station. Although I called both morning ant afternoon, that important official's office was locked, and, he could not be found. Casually, on Monday evening, I met tlif resruits, and followed tho procession tc Buckle Street. No doubt others havs had similar experiences to myself. These facts are quite true. —I am, etc., COUNTRY VISITOR. I\S. —On Monday niglitj-. at the barracks) an officer told me tho Taranaki recruits would entrain at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. As a matter of fact, they went 'at.7 a.m. Tho officer in charge of recruits.at Lanibtou Station at 10 a.m. proved tho exception, being courteous and obliging. But why all this humbug, this casualness, this don't caro style, passing it on to someone else? It's vert aggravating and tiring when one has journeyed many miles to the City.— C.V. - -
