Dr. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, arrived at San Francisco (writes the "New Zealand Herald's" American correspondent)' on April 9. Tho Bishop had benefited greatly by the voyage from New Zealand, and was looking fit and well. He intends to visit Chicago 011 his way to New York, from which port he will leave for Italy. Dean Lighthcart, of Rotorua, who accompanies Dr. Clcarv, has left San Francisco on a visit to Virginia,'where lie worked for some years with a Roman Catholic mission. Major Charles H. D. Evans, who has a record of twenty years' military service, has been granted a long-servica medal. Mr. T. C. Dawson, of the Hutt, has been advised by the Defence Department that his son, Lieut. Dawson, lias been admitted to a Cairo hospital with a broken leg. At yesterday's meeting of the execuJ tive of the "Wellington War Relief Association, it was reported that Mr. Penrose had commenced work as an. honorary interviewer, and that Sir. D. M. Teats had offered his services, and would probably commence shortly. . Mr. J. H. C. Bond, general traffic manager for tho Union Company, will arrive here from Nelson to-morrow; and will proceed south the same day.'
Captain Maurice E. Denniston, of Wellington, who filled the position of adjutant on board the Maheno during her last visit to Egypt and back, lias been invalided off that vessel on account of ill-health {states the "Otago Daily, Times"). Prior to his departure from the ship, Captain Denniston received unmistakable and tangible evidence o£ the high degree of popularity which he has attained as the result of his personal geniality, and also by reason of the tactful manner in which he carried out his duties. Tho medical orderlies on the Malic no presented him. -with a, beautiful gold wristlet watch and a handsome silver vase (both for Mrs. Denniston), and in handing him these articles Mr. C. G. MacKenzie, the regi-< mental sergeant-major, assured Captain Denniston of the very high esteem in which he was held by the whole of the ship's company. All present then joined in singing "For He's a Jolly Good Feli low," and, after, the recipient had-re-plied, he was accorded, three, rousing cheers. When Captain'Denniston was taking his final leave of the vessel a, little later,- the medical orderlies again lined the sides of the ship and clieered him as he passed down the gangway.
Mr. A. J. Benzie, who has been factory manager to the "New. Zealand Times" Company for the past three years, has been appointed to the same position in the establishment of the Christchurch "Press 1 Company. Mr. Benzie will enter upon his new. duties almost immediately. Mrs. J. "Wyllie, of Dunedin, has every reason to be proud of her sons—all married men (says a southern, correspondent). 1 On April 6, three —James, George, and Walter—left for Trentham with the Otago quota for the 15th Reinforcements. • A fourth, Alexander,
