James Allen) to increase the allowance for a soldier's children (sixpence a day) for all children under 16 years of age, instead of limiting it to sixpence per day for four children as has been tho case. '.'.''■ The Minister was written to on tho subject, and- in his reply stated that the' request had been forwarded on to tjie Recruiting Board for consideration. Yesterday the following letter was received from the Secretary of the New Zealand Government Recruiting Board (Mr. J. D.'Gray):—

_"With reference to your letter of the 17th ult.,- dealing with the allowance to children of men who enlist in the Expeditionary Force, addressed by you to the Hon. Minister of Defence,- and referred, by liini; to thel Recruiting Board, I am now''directed to advise you that the board,' at its meeting today, decided to recommend Cabinet to increase- the of children With respect to whom the payment of 3s. 6d. per week is made to' five instead of the present- limit of four. The board was unablo to agree. to .the suggestion of your association that; the 'allowance of 3s. Gd. -per week should be paid to all thildren under 16 years of age."
